Several years ago our school hired a custodian who was here on a work visa and working on citizenship. She is from Albania. About 2 years ago she passed her Citizenship and became an American. She is working on trying to get her husband and her adult children here.
Today she asked me if I could help her find out where to vote. I was like, did you register? She said, yes you helped me after I was sworn in as an American citizen. Yes, I forgot. I found out where she was to vote and drove her. Her English is OK on good days. We talked through what she had to do. I dropped her off.
She got so emotional as she got out. “I am a real American, I get to vote!” She was raised in communism.
Super cool moment. I have learned to appreciate what it means to be an American and how special we have it. Even with all of our imperfections, and fighting and all of the stupid stuff that happens, it is still the greatest place on Earth!! I just hope we can get the rest of her family here.
