Anyone have a Blu-Ray player?

I got a Blu-Ray player this last Christmas and I am really glad I did. I just got the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and despite a lot of whining on other message boards about it not being the 'extended edition' it looks great and I'm totally loving it. I also plan on getting Avatar this Thursday and cannot wait to get Saving Private Ryan which comes out on May 4th.

I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox last night. Probably my least favorite Wes Anderson movie, my favorite being the Royal Tenenbaum's. I really just couldn't get into it, maybe it was the fact that it was

stop motion instead of real life characters. I also saw Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and while I am usually a sucker for a good Nicholas Cage movie this one really didn't resonate with me

either. Basically Nicholas Cage is a police lieutenant by day and drug addict by night and even though he did a great job acting wise I just couldn't get into this movie like I have some of his others. I know some of the reviews were pretty good.

Anyone have any good blu-ray movies to recommend? Audio/video quality/overall movie or just have any movies to recommend watching in general??!!

I'm not sure what kind of movies you're into or what you've seen, but here's a couple Blu-Rays I've watched off the top of my head:

The Hunt for Red October

Children of Men

Pineapple Express

The Shining

A Clockwork Orange (probably too weird for a lot of people, but one of my favorites)

They are all excellent movies, and the Blu-Ray quality seemed top notch to me. However, I'm not a huge audio/video person, so I can't grade movies by the how they look or sound.

I've seen quite a few Blu-Rays, so if you need any more recommendations or are looking for a specific kind of movie just ask. (I'm a big movie guy) :thumbs

Casino Royale is one of the best blu-ray releases ever, from a technical standpoint (and a fine film in it's own right, at least in my opinion).

300 is also an incredible visual and audio spectacle. However..

If you seriously want to see the maximum capabilities of your tv set, watch Speed Racer. The movie is meant to be for all ages and essentially is (it isn't terrible, but it isn't great), but watching this movie and it's dazzling display of "color orgasm" would probably be similar to being trapped inside a huge arcade with exploding gumball machines and cotton candy flying everwhere, along with lots of glowsticks and chrome, all whilst not having any eyelids.

 
These may not be your taste, but they really shine on Blu-ray.

Any of the big budget summertime action movies look sick on blu-ray. . .my personal favorite is The Dark Knight. However Ironman and Star Trek look amazing on it as well.

 
Speed Racer is an orgy for the eyes. Rent planet earth, it is unreal and you will more than likely buy it. Also The Fifth element is awesome on blue ray (it kicked a$$ on DVD too), the colors in that are awesome, and Milla Jonavich running around in gauze strips isn't so bad either. I haven't seen it yet but they say the Blade Runner is amazing. I guess it was transferred from the original film, with some new, and very expensive, and time consuming process. I guess its one of the best blu-rays ever (so far). Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Kitel (sp) is pretty good. It came out maybe 20 years ago and was pretty controversial so it might not be on Blu-Ray, or even DVD.

General Blackshirt is right, if you dont have some sort of surround system, start looking. You are missing half the movie. One request, don't buy from Best Buy, go to Schafers, DTX, or Sound Environment. They will set it all up for you and the products are way better than best buy, and you are supporting a local business, well that is if you live here.

Nick Cage hasn't been in a "good" movie in a very long time. Strigori lists some pretty good movies, as well as the the last two Bond movies (the car scene to start the last movie is pretty cool.) Avatar is a must, as is the Matrix trilogy. But the whole reason I bought my blu-ray player was because of the Dark Knight. It's really good.

I just watched Avatar on blu-ray yesterday and I must say it looked great. I liked the movie also. Also I think it goes without saying that Nick Cage for me at least is in more of what I would consider guilty pleasure movies as opposed to 'oscar worthy' movies. Face/Off and things of that nature. I just sort of thought that was kind of understood!

If you like the Soprano's I highly recommend getting season 6 part 1 on blu-ray. I actually have parts 1 and 2 but part 1 really has the best episodes. It looks fantastic and there are some memorable episodes too. Highly recommended it if you are a fan.

Oh yes the Transformers part where the Autobot blasts his gun into the street to help give him leverage to flip over that chick screaming. That sounds AMAZING if you have a nice home theatre system. I got a 12" Klipsch subwoofer that shakes my whole house.

28 Weeks Later also looks good on Blu Ray too.
