OWH: NU sees ranking of No. 20 as a start Reply

Greg Austin's first three seasons with the Nebraska football program have started with the Huskers sitting outside the Associated Press Top 25 and looking in.

Their spot at No. 20 in the AP preseason poll released Friday allows for a change of scenery.

"It's a step, but only a step," said Austin, a senior guard. "Like Coach always says, it's not where you start but where you finish.

"But it's very pivotal for a team to start in a good spot in order to move up as high as we want to move up. If you're way out, you don't get the consideration."

The Huskers last went into a season ranked in 2002, starting at No. 10 in what turned out to be a disappointing 7-7 campaign. They weren't a preseason Top 25 team in 2003 but moved in - and then stayed in - after kicking off a 10-3 year with a 17-7 win over Oklahoma State.

Key dates • Saturday: Fan/autograph day

• Aug. 21: First day of fall semester

• Sept. 2: Season opener (Louisiana Tech at Nebraska)

• Sept. 16: First road game (NU at Southern California)

• Sept. 30: Big 12 opener (Kansas at NU)

• Oct. 7: First Big 12 road game (NU at Iowa State)

Nebraska's only ranking since Bill Callahan became head coach in 2004 was its spot at No. 24 in both the final AP and USA Today coaches polls after last season.

"It's important to show that our program is headed back to its normal traditions," sophomore defensive end Barry Turner said. "We're getting stronger and getting back to the national caliber team."

Ohio State is the AP preseason No. 1 team coming off a 10-2 record and final ranking of No. 4 in 2005. The Buckeyes are followed by Notre Dame, Texas, Auburn, West Virginia and Southern Cal - all of whom received at least three first-place votes.

Nebraska sees two of those top six teams this season, traveling to USC on Sept. 16 and entertaining defending national champion Texas on Oct. 21.

Oklahoma is ranked 10th and Texas Tech 25th in the AP preseason poll, compiled by balloting of 65 national news media members. Iowa is No. 16 after finishing last season unranked.

Nebraska, 8-4 a year ago, already has been placed No. 22 in the USA Today preseason poll. Sports Illustrated had the Huskers No. 18 in its college preview released this week.

"We haven't really focused on ratings much," Callahan said Friday. "We haven't paid any attention to the ratings. But it's important. We'd be disappointed if we weren't rated."

Austin called the preseason rating "exposure." Turner called it a starting point. Any advancement then falls into the Huskers' own hands over a 12-game season that starts Sept. 2 at home vs. Louisiana Tech.

"People who win national championships, they don't always start out No. 1 or No. 2," Turner said.

Nebraska moved into ratings contention last November by beating Kansas State and Colorado. The Huskers then knocked out Michigan and claimed their No. 24 spot by beating the Wolverines 32-28 in the Alamo Bowl.

It's been all business since, and junior I-back Brandon Jackson said ratings talk didn't mean much Friday.

"We're just pounding the rock right now," Jackson said. "We're doing it day by day, and we just get better and better."

If we do beat Texas and USC and WHEN we beat Iowa St. I think we would then beat everyone else!!!! I don't know though undefeated is a tall order for this year I would be happy with 2 losses!!!! :)
