Armstrong Leading the QB Race

Separation between QBs on depth chart most obvious today. Armstrong and Fyfe took all the reps against top defenses. #Huskers

I thought this was one of Tommy Armstrong's best practices of the fall. He's looked much better over the last week or so.

Hopefully things are clicking for Tommy now. Much better reports the last few days than the first week.
Yeah, he really needs to take the reins the next 2 weeks.

- Armstrong had a strong day controlling the offense and reading blitzes.

- He continues to throw low on short and intermediate routes causing more drops by his receivers (this kind of throw notably plagued Quincy Enunwa and Kenny Bell in 2013). After a slow start, he finished strong, carving up the defense by the end of practice.

- Fyfe had an up and down day as the flow of the No. 2 offense was off. He was not always on target either, throwing a pick to linebacker Trevor Roach.

Small sample - but pass gm still leaves a bit to be desired for #Huskers - accuracy has been an issue a few times today for Armstrong

For the love of everything sane in the world, make this the reason to be run heavy.

Although I would bet against a read opponent, they'd jam 8 in the box, which might make it easier for the QB to hit the quick pass.

I keep hearing good then bad, good, then bad. Bo sounded really impressed by Armstrong in an interview I heard earlier today. If Armstrong is still struggling after the first two or three games I would start to worry, but every QB misses some throws. Manning missed on a couple throws in the two quarters of football he played Sunday. That's Peyton Manning missing on some throws in only a few offensive possessions. I begin to wonder if there are really enough errors to be deserving of a tweet like this, or if we just love to stir up some worry.

I think it's a given that Nebraska should rely heavily on the run. Run first, pass if necessary.

Which is exactly why we will throw 55% of the time.

Sip, it seems like reports are pretty consistent that "Tommy threw a pick" in practice. Is this because the defense knows what's coming, when the O is working on a specific package, etc. . . Or is Tommy still not seeing the short passes well? He actually could've had a few more picks last year, some guys from Georgia and NW dropped some INT's.

@Aaron: Very good question. Armstrong did not look good throwing the ball early in camp. Sure, I think some of it was the defense's familiarity with the offense. Some of it was Armstrong shaking off rust. Last week, as Pelini noted, Armstrong seemed to settle in and the interceptions diminished. He played very well in a Wednesday night scrimmage. I still regard his throwing accuracy as an issue to watch closely. Overall, though, I really like what I've seen from Armstrong in camp. He is extremely poised. That's what I like best. He's strong with the ball in his hands (I don't think he'll fumble much) and scrambles/creates well. Just a big, strong presence.

Sipple's take, but I take his opinions lightly.

Glad to read this. I've been critical of Armstrong but I really don't want a controversy.

You know who's hoping we maintain a robust passing game?

Ameer Abdullah.

Pass if necessary?

Of course it's necessary.

Announcing your intention to run Abdullah into the line 30 times a game and treating the forward pass (and your quarterback) as a liability is a quick ticket to killing the rushing game. Defenses will be licking their lips if we decide to be predictible rather than multiple. And what's the point of being loaded at wide receiver?

When Tommy Armstrong's yards per attempt passing fall below Ameer Abdullah's yards per attempt rushing, we can talk.

Tommie Frazier's completion percentage stunk. Only one year above 50%. Yet his TD to INT ratio was great. Passing yards per attempt over 4 yrs was 7.5 yards.

Beck needs to study this. Lean on the run. TF, statistically, either threw the ball for completions or into the dirt. Averaging 1 INT every 43 passes. I'll take that.

I am sure DC's will copy the past D's since UT in 2010. Crowd the box and test NU's QB's arm.

PA, misdirection, high percentage passes that develop quickly TA can complete in his sleep.

You took me very literal.

Of course we will pass.

we didn't announce our intentions with Abdullah last year? Every team on our schedule better know our intentions this year too. Our intentions damn well better be to line it up and run. Abdullah doesn't have to carry the rock 30 times a game. Cross and Newby ought to be able to help a bit shouldn't they? Armstrong will do a bit of running this year as well I would assume.

You run the ball to set up the pass. You don't pass just because you feel like you haven't passed in awhile. You don't pass because your percentages are off on your little run/pass pie chart. I expect an efficient offense, a manageable offense for a sophomore.m one built on the run game, play action passing, bootleg, and the screen all sound fantasric as well. Use Armstrong's mobility to your advantage, but if Abduallh is getting 5 yards per carry, Cross is pounding out four yards per, and Newby's speed and elusiveness bring a nice change up in there as well, then you don't quit until they make you quit.

I think this has been an obvious issue of Beck's and had been discussed at great length. Don't go away from what's working. Abduallh works, PERIOD. Still, I see someone plus1'd your comment so apparently multiple is still the in thing. Yea, because being a perennial top ten rushing team in the country just isn't good enough.

Run the ball, play defense. I'm a Broncos fan, trust me on this!

This. I wish that Beck would truly understand what he has in the backfield. By all accounts, the best in the B1G and IIRC, one of the top 5 tandems in college in AA and Cross. Lean on the run. Pass when needed. If we are running well, keep running.

I am really hoping that in addition to examining the past 12-18 months to see what plays worked, Beck is also REALLY looking at what TA has successfully done in practice.
