As a new mod what can I do to be useful?

It seems like most of the job is making sure folks don't make personal attacks. Is there anything else that I (or the other new mods) can do to be useful.

1. Make sure that folks aren't linking to paid content, things like recruiting sites seem to be the biggest problem.

2. Make sure that folks aren't linking to our competition message boards. We want folks to come here, there is no reason to go to those other sites as this one is great.

3. Keep folks on task on what the topic is in the thread. We let stuff slide more in the off-season as there isn't as much stuff to discuss, but once the season kicks off we like to keep things tidy and and on topic.

4. If someone starts a thread about say Ohio State and it's in the Husker Football forum you'd move something like that to the B1G ten forum so it keeps things in the right spots.

Generally things like that and above all just be yourself, that's why you're a mod in the first place.

I think 90% of it is nothing different than business as usual. Hang around, post. If you see a spammer, flag them. If things get really out of hand, step in. When situations with a member (or otherwise) need to be discussed, it usually happens here. Once the season starts the reports should start happening more frequently, but don't feel pressured to oblige every member who wants to use a Mod to hit back at a poster who has upset them.

Keeping the peace can (and should) be a very passive job, and I think everyone's normal presence around here sets a good example.

Not that I'm itching to do this, but I haven't noticed a "Ban Member" feature since I've been looking around the new tools. Is that under the 'Warning' system if you were to click that button?

Yes, it's within the warn panel. When you adjust someone's punishment you can move them into the Banned group.

An IP ban is only possible within the ACP, but I rarely do this.
