Former player arrested in Osborne check fraud

A former Nebraska football player was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of passing a check from University of Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne.

Lynn Finney, 54, was arrested at 1 p.m. Wednesday. He is suspected of defrauding Old Chicago of $161 in food and cash on Feb. 12 with a previously electronically voided check.

The check was made out to Wal-Mart and came from the account of Tom and Nancy Osborne.

Finney, who is listed as a transient in police records, was a linebacker for the Huskers for two years, starting in 1972.

In high school, he was standout defensive player at Pius X High School and was named outstanding defensive player in Nebraska’s Shrine Bowl.

Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood said last week that the Old Chicago server apparently didn't realize the check had been stamped electronically and that a transaction already had occurred. Finney allegedly got $60 worth of food and the rest in cash.

It's uncertain where he found the used check and if he doctored it to make it look like it had not been used before.

According to Flood, he told the server at the Old Chicago in the Haymarket he had gotten an endorsed check from the Osbornes in relation to a fundraising event for cancer.

Finney left college to study ballet and became a stage performer for several years. He developed the Finney Method, combining ballet stretching moves with his athletic experience to train players for the Harlem Globetrotters and the San Diego Chargers.

In a 1995 interview, Finney said he got caught up in the recreational drug scene and had to go through rehabilitation to kick a crack cocaine habit that cost him $150,000.

In 1995, he was working in construction and speaking to school and youth groups about the dangers of doing drugs.

More recently, Flood said, he has been a fixture in downtown Lincoln.

Ohhhhhhhh man. Hes mad now! He posted a story about something a player from 30 years ago did! I am so scared.

Leave that goat alone! How about you let the goat go and go back to f*cking your mom every night you pathetic piece of s*it.

Believe it or not, when I was in college about nine years ago, Mr. Finney approached me asking for gas money, saying his car had recently ran dry. He talked about being a former player and carried a fake newspaper article around. He walked up to my buddies ground level apartment deck at Ashley Square about 9 p.m. at night and it kinda scared the hell outta us. I gave him five bucks and told him to go away. About a week later a story surfaced in the DN about him trying this on a number of other students... sad...

oh yeah...this is the woodshed...Huckfuskers is GAY!

A | A | A Nebraska football player Andy Christensen remains in jail after the judge in his case and his attorney both withdrew on Tuesday.

Christensen had been scheduled for arraignment after being arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault, resisting arrest and failure to comply with police. He'll now go to court Thursday.

Judge Mary Doyle recused herself without giving a reason in court. Defense attorney Brad Roth said outside the courtroom that Doyle is acquainted with the alleged victim.

Roth also withdrew from the case, but he declined to say why publicly. Robert Creager is Christensen's new attorney.

A 23-year-old Lincoln woman reported that the 21-year-old Christensen approached her from behind, reached underneath her clothing and sexually assaulted her about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the Brass Rail, a downtown Lincoln bar.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini suspended Christensen indefinitely. "The charges against Andy are serious in nature and these types of actions will not be tolerated," said Pelini in a statement released over the weekend.

Christensen started the first three games at left guard last fall before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He started eight games as a sophomore in 2006

I knew it was only a matter of time!

LINCOLN — Facing questions about his philosophies on discipline and a trio of incidents last weekend, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday it's pretty simple what he's demanding of his football team.

In fact, he repeated the same four-word sentence three times during a 35-minute interview in his office: "Do the right thing."

"They know exactly what is being asked of them," Pelini said. "There's not a lot of gray area. Each and every guy, they make a choice to either be a part of the program or not be a part of the program. If you choose to be a part of the program you have to adhere by certain standards — and they're high."

At least publicly, Pelini's standards this week are faced with their first real scrutiny since he was named Husker coach on Dec. 2.

Four current players and two former Huskers were either arrested or ticketed in three separate incidents that occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning. The most serious of those is offensive lineman Andy Christensen remaining in Lancaster County Jail as the result of an alleged sexual assault at a downtown Lincoln bar.

Pelini immediately handed Christensen an indefinite suspension. He has barred NFL draft prospect Carl Nicks from NU's pro day for an arrest and behavior he's considered a bad example for current Huskers. Some other unnamed players have been suspended for other matters; one unnamed player has been dismissed.

In light of the most recent developments, Pelini met with the team Monday night and "clearly explained" a zero-tolerance policy from this point forward regarding alcohol and social responsibility. He has made certain establishments off limits to players.

"If you bring embarrassment to our program and this athletic department and the university, it'll be dealt with," Pelini said.

"Every situation is different, every circumstance is different and they'll all be dealt with differently. But they will be dealt with strictly and severely. It's just the way it is."

Although a head coach for the first time, Pelini said he previously handled some discipline in his 16 years as an assistant coach. To keep it simple for his NU players, he said he's "not going to line up 9,000 team rules."

"You can't cover everything with rules," Pelini said. "If you just have a list of rules, there's always going to be a gray area. Well, take the gray out of it. It's pretty black and white.

"People nowadays, they know what's right. They know the difference between right and wrong. Do the right thing or don't be part of the program."

Pelini said Christensen's status with the team hadn't changed as of Tuesday.

The senior had his arraignment postponed until Thursday as Judge Mary Doyle recused herself from the case because, she said, she was an acquaintance of the alleged victim. Also, Christensen's attorney, Brad Roth, withdrew from the case for unspecified reasons.

Christensen, 21, remained in Lancaster County jail Tuesday night on $500,000 bond, of which he would need to pay 10 percent, or $50,000, to be released. In addition to being arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault, he was cited for resisting arrest and failure to comply.

Here is an account taken from court documents:

The woman was at the bar with friends and was approached by Christensen, whom she knows.

At one point, she turned away from Christensen. He then reached under her skirt and fondled her, briefly penetrating her vagina with two fingers.

Christensen pulled his hand away when she turned back toward him, and he walked to another part of the bar.

Christensen was arrested by Lincoln police outside the Brass Rail, 1436 O St. He aggressively resisted efforts to handcuff him and place him in a police vehicle. He kicked the vehicle, denting it.

He was placed in a security chair at the jail to control his behavior.

In a separate incident, Nicks and former NU receiver Maurice Purify were cited for being inmates of a disorderly house, according to Lincoln police. Nicks then was jailed when a failure to disperse citation was added.

It's significant that Nicks won't be allowed to take part today in NU's pro day, because a number of NFL scouts and personnel will be in Lincoln to watch former Huskers test and work out. Pelini hadn't yet decided if Purify would be allowed to participate, calling it "50-50."

NU offensive lineman Mike Smith and defensive lineman Ben Martin were involved in the same incident as Nicks and Purify at a northwest Lincoln home. Smith was cited for maintaining a disorderly house and Martin for being an inmate of a disorderly house.

Also, linebacker Nick Covey was ticketed for minor in possession in an unrelated incident within hours of the other two.

He is being mentored by one of the great criminal recruiters of all time. Way to go Doc Tom! Keeping the tradition alive!

I would hate to overwhelm your third grade education with anything new. I understand that your life must have been hard being the play toy for all those toothless bastards you call kin. Is that the reason you have grown fond of Goats and other farm animals. They used to tie you up in the pig pin and see how much they could make you sound like a PIG when you squeeled.

Now move along before your feelings get hurt, I am sure your a$$ hurts enough as it is.
