B1G STANDINGS

We are 1 week removed from rhule making what most of us considered a bold mid-season change for the better.   Most of us also realized that changing the oc wouldn't result in overnight changes.   Suggesting that Rhule should be fired 1 week later because we lost a game on the road where we were significant underdogs seems pretty crazy to me.

I think the frustration with Rhule has lasted longer than just the past week.  For those that were not fond of Rhule before the OC change, they still will feel that way.  And to be honest, the defense has regressed this year and had no answer for USC.  Our 2024 defense is giving up about 9 more points a game vs BIG opponents than the 2023 defense.  Fans were promised a dramatic year 2 improvement from Rhule and we simply are not seeing it.

Very good chance 5W-7L, again.  Eight consecutive years NO bowl 😡.  Loaded with 4-Stars and one 5-Star yet losing records

This is exactly why I think recruiting classes are a bunch of BS. If you don’t have the right coaches that can develop the players and devise game plans that take advantage of their talent, recruiting classes are useless. This year has exposed Rhule for the fraud he is. However, next year, will be better since we have a better recruiting class. Let us keep thinking that and drinking the nice refreshing koolaid.

Losing games that we were close to winning sucks.  I get it but fans weren't promised anything.  Expectations were created by talking media heads and the fan base has hung on every word.  Rhule went 6-6 in year 2 at Tulane.  He went 7-6 at Baylor in Year 2.  In year 3 his results went way up at both stops.  Similar results are still possible here.  If we don't beat Wisconsin or Iowa, I could see the heat turned up a bit but he will still be given year 3 for sure.

Alberts specifically called out Rhule's large jump in wins from year 1 to year 2 and again in year 3.  He called him a "Turnaround Artist."  I don't believe many Husker fans believe this program has turned the corner in year 2.  Here is a breakdown of the difference in wins from Year 1 to Year 2 at Rhule's three schools:

Temple:

Year 1:  2 wins

Year 2:  6 wins

Improvement of 4 wins

Baylor:

Year 1: 1 win

Year 2: 7 wins

Improvement of 6 wins

Nebraska:

Year 1: 5 wins

Year 2:  TBD but at most 7 wins

Improvement of 2 wins at most

I don't like the direction anything is going, but he did win more hear in year 1 than those other schools.  So if you simply take the year 2 win total, and total number of wins over the first two years we are close to those other schools.  More even in total wins already.  The trend at Temple and Baylor was upward however, and it appears stagnant to regressing here at Nebraska which is the issue.

Both Temple and Baylor had winning 3 year runs before Rhule showed up however, so the 1/2 win totals in year 1 were him going further backwards just to get them back where they were.  I am still not convinced he ever did any "program building" anywhere.  I think we are seeing what he is, a lifetime .500 coach.  If we lose these last two I believe he will be exactly .500 for his college coaching career.

Yes the Baylor situation is definitely unique given their circumstances.  I am frankly tired of Nebraska AD's paying a bunch of money for unproven coaches, and as I have said in prior threads, we have had 3 coaches since 2015, and Mike Riley is the best of those 3 coaches.  I would put Rhule ahead of Frost, but I don't think we hired Rhule to be almost as good as Mike Riley.  We needed a homerun hire and are stuck with a .500 coach who knows how to preach.

I get your point but I think it is worth mentioning strength of schedule as well.  2 of our losses are to teams currently a lock in the playoff and one of our wins was against another team that has a decent shot of making the playoff.

I get that our trajectory doesn't look good but I think the change at OC has the chance to change that.

8 wins are still possible by the way.

Rhule was 5-6 going into the last week in year 2 at Temple.  They beat Tulane but didn't play in a bowl game so finished 6-6.

Rhule was 5-6 going into the last week in year 2 at Baylor.  They won their last game against TT and then beat Vandy on the bowl game to get to 7-6.

We might lose to Wisconsin and Iowa.  If that happens, I think more of this conversation is justified but as it stands, it is pretty much on schedule.  We are just an impatient fan base imo.

I get where one might think this, but in reality we are the exact opposite of that.  The fans have been supporting this school and this team FAR more than they deserve over the last decade.  We have the longest bowl drought in the country, by double any other Power 4 school.  We continue to see the same thing over and over and over, yet we still show up.  We deserve something better than this and are not impatient after this long.   No other team gets this much support with this level of losing anywhere else in the world.  There should be psych studies done on us at this point.

In that respect, I agree.  Regarding Matt and out current situation, I disagree.  We were all excited for him to come here and duplicate his previous results.  We should wait and see if he can do it.

We have no choice but to give him years more, and I want it to work like everyone else.  I don't think most are giving up, and I don't think it is unreasonable to want to see progress and a bowl this year.  The last month has been rough and the opposite of progress.  I am happy to be patient if I see signs that this is moving the right direction.  Right now, I don't and that is discouraging.

I think you are forgetting that being 5-6 in Year 2 at other schools was a dramatic improvement from Year 1.  If we finish this year under .500 it will not feel like any improvement has been made, and the data and stats would support that as our offensive production is up slightly but our defense has regressed, giving up around 9 more points a game this conference season. If we somehow win the final 2 games AND a bowl game I think the outlook will definitely change.  I personally have no confidence that this team gets to 7 or 8 wins.
