While SDSU will certainly have defensive breakdowns this weekend, I thought I would post some statistics of their woeful 0-2 season so far. With a blowout 26-3 loss to Delaware and a 24-14 loss to Illinois State, the Huskers should have no problem sending their neighbors home early.

With an abysmal red zone offense, look for the Huskers to shut down any sustained drives of SDSU at the goal line. SDSU is 1-5 for field goals this season, so don't look for them to score 3's often. SDSU has been intercepted 5 times over 2 games.

Look for the Blackshirts to pick up around 2-3 interceptions this weekend. SDSU's QB is -24 rushing on the season. If he gets pressured in the pocket he certainly won't be scrambling for a gain. With no go to receivers to throw to, SDSU QB, O'Brien will be hammered all day.

SDSU return teams are mediocre at best. Expect Niles or Kinnie to take at least one to the house.

Ultimately, SDSU will likely be the worst team we will face this non conference.

My prediction, SDSU 10 (in the 4th quarter against 3rd/4th string) Nebraska 63

Look for Zac Lee and Cody Green to receive sizable playing time along with Tray, Jones, C. Evans, A. Green, Q Enunwa.

This has all the makings of a bloodbath. I wonder if we'll try to rack up style points or if we'll call off the dogs early and put in the backups.

 
It looks like Green and Lee could play a lot against SDSU. What I do not want to see is those 2 running plays that we have been running because of Martinez's speed. We need to have those 2 running plays that compliment their skillset.

 
Thanks for the breakdown. Hope we take care of business early and often so we can better prep those backups before conference play, when we'll need them most.

 
Last game before confrence play for our youngsters to get valuable experience.

David and Martin should be gaining confidence every week.

 
Has anybody ever played a game without ever throwing a single pass? That would be cool, to be the first team to do that.

 
I would really like to see Green play the entire second half and get some practice in even if he starts off badly. The kid needs the game experience and maybe it will help him settle down during bigger games.

On another SDSU note; the stadium in Brookings booed the home team last weekend against Norther Illinois.. My homestate is quality.

BROOKINGS - South Dakota State got booed - and deservedly so - by some of the student body late in the first half of Saturday night's game at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

To say the least, that wasn't the noise the 20th-ranked Jackrabbits had hoped to generate in the first home game since their first playoff appearance in 30 years.

SDSU continued its subpar play from Week 1, giving up the first four scores in a 24-14 loss to Illinois State in its Missouri Valley Football Conference opener before a Cereal Bowl crowd of 12,245.

The Jacks (0-2, 0-1) didn't get on the board until the fourth quarter - finally scoring their first touchdown of the season - against a team hadn't come within 20 points of SDSU in two previous meetings and had been giving up 40 points a game this year.

Before that, the Jacks missed three field goals, dropped multiple passes and failed to force a turnover. They didn't show up until the fourth quarter in a contest between teams picked to finish second and third in the Valley.

"Right now we're not as good of a football team as we're used to," said SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier, whose squad has dropped three games in a row dating back to last season. "That doesn't shock them, but it holds us back. Every year you have to pass the baton. We have not found out who's got the baton."

The Jacks had an opportunity to take the lead early. They won the toss and - in a rare move - elected to receive the opening kick. That should have paid off in points, but fifth-year senior receiver Matt Hylland dropped a third-down pass at the Illinois State 15-yard line.

Then again, having a first down in the red zone didn't guarantee anything on this night. SDSU junior Kyle Harris missed field goals of 34 and 35 yards in addition to being wide right from 50.

Things deteriorated quickly.

In a span of nine possessions in the first half, the Redbirds (2-1, 1-0) found the end zone twice on drives totaling 27 plays and 162 yards, SDSU missed two field goals and Hylland dropped another pass that wound up being intercepted to set up an ISU kick.

For the second week in a row, the Jacks were in a 17-0 hole in the first half.

"There was a great energy in the locker room before the game," SDSU senior running back Kyle Minett said. "I really thought we were going to come out and win this. We had a big drop on that first drive - we had some momentum. We really struggled inside the red zone. Ultimately, I think that's what lost us the football game."

The Jacks got going in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 3-yard run by Tyler Duffy and a 5-yard pass from Thomas O'Brien to Brandon Hubert. But they failed on a two-point try that would have brought them within eight with 7:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, and then committed a holding penalty on a 45-yard catch by Aaron Rollin at the Birds' 5-yard line.

That was another issue - the Jacks committed seven penalties for 83 yards in the second half. They were physical, but in the wrong way.

"We figured as a team it wasn't good enough to match them - we had to beat them," said ISU running back Ashton Leggett, a transfer from Michigan State. "We had to come in here and make a point that we're serious in this conference."

Meanwhile, SDSU is in serious trouble of being out of contention before the midpoint of the season with trips to Nebraska and Northern Iowa looming the next two weeks.

"I'd love to be sitting at 2-0 right now, but we're 0-2," said Minett, who rushed for 120 yards and made five catches. "We have to continue to work harder and find what's we've been doing wrong and try to get a win next week."

The forward pass wasn't legal until 1906, so any team before that would've just run the ball the whole time.
