BRI, You Back Yet?

So I'm on my way home from the bars with some friends when we hear a screech and a car rams us from behind. We were driving in town going about 40 mph in the right lane and they were trying to race a car that was in the left lane. It didn't stop, but instead tried to get away. As it passed we tried to get the plates and thought we had them. We continued to chase them going about 60 through town through a couple red lights, parking lots, and residential streets and they eventually lost us. We were in a PT Cruiser and they were in a Jeep Cherokee (~1998, Black/Dark Blue/Dark Green). Just got done talking to the cops and they basically said that at this point the chances of finding them is very unlikely. They couldn't match the plates with a vehicle that matched. The officer suspected that the plates either were fake or not on the correct vehicle. No one was seriously hurt and their wasn't too much damage, but I'm pissed as hell. The plates from what we could tell were OKN-534 (Nebraska - Lincoln) or something extremely close. If anyone knows the best way of approaching this I would appreciate some advice. I DON'T want to let some douche bag get away with something like this.

I just got back late last night eliot. You are pretty much SOL when I comes to something like this because if the plates don't match the vehicle then most of the time they have in fact put another cars plates on this vehicle because they can't afford to register the current vehicle or they plan on doing stupid crap in it. The only other thing that the Lincoln Police Department may be able to do is find out how many vehicles in Lincoln match the description of the vehicle and then investigate the situation from there. Let me know bro.

Don't they still have the first set of numbers that determine what county the car is registered in? I remember back in the day 59 county was Sarpy and 1 was Douglas counties. Being a LEO in Texas although we have different laws, I would agree with BRI and say that you are screwed. Did ya go back to the scene of where the 1st impact took place and see if anything could have fallen off of their vehicle? Headlight lens, piece of molding, something like that. If not then, not much else anyone can do. Sorry  And since there was no bodily injury, it's a safe bet that the PD won't waste man power hours searching for the perp's vehicle.

Thanks BRI. Well Lincoln and Omaha plates don't use numbers for counties anymore. They now use things in this form:

Lincoln:

OKN-534

PGR-295

Omaha:

LJD-395

MDI-884

I would have thought that we could have done a reverse search on the make and model of the car in Lincoln. My thought was that we may have just messed one or two digits up. (i.e. O instead of D, or 8 instead of 3) <---Look simmilar

Sorry to hear that Eliot. I wonder if they were drinking as well and just freaked out that you guys might call the police on them.

The reason I mention is, a few months ago, my friends & I had a similar situation at a heavy traffic light around 2am. The area was filled with police. My friend (the driver) hit his breaks and we slid into the car in front. They both got out, exchanged numbers and got back in the vehicles quickly and we took off.

The thing about it was, my friend felt like crap for taking his eye off the road & hitting the dude's car. No one wanted to go to jail. That's why the exchange was so fast. And my friend ended up paying the guy out of pocket a thousand bucks (and then 2 grand on his 4runner).

Glad your safe though.
