Bury Switzer

Did anyone catch Unsportmanlike Conduct yesterday? They had Barry Switzer on as a guest and I gotta admit I have respect for the guy. The question was posed about what rivalry means more to him OU v. UT or NU v. OU and he picked NU v. OU because he said it means more to the coaches and players than to the fans because of the mutual respect between the teams and the fact that back in the day that game always impacted the National Championship. The guy's not so bad in retirement.

Yeah I actually read his book. One of the violations he was investigated for really was kind of pathetic. Apparently he had a kid from Arkansas who had no money. His father was on his death bed and Barry bought the kid a ticket so he could go back home and be with his family. Another had something to do with Barry buying some kids coats who again were not very rich. Now I know there's more to it then that but it would be hard for a coach not to take care of his players in that respect.

The NCAA rules are so screwed up. They will not allow a kid on scholarship at the Division 1 level to even get a part time job. I realize their food, lodging, and some clothes/shoes are provided. However, what about the other things in college that a student athlete needs? How are they ever to get enough funds to have a car, go out on a date, etc.? I think that the college profits so much from these athletes that they should receive a meager allowance if they won't let them get a job. What would be wrong with paying each student athlete on scholarship $500 a month at the D1 level?

I never thought Barry was a bad guy. He did recruit some questionable players, but so did Dr. Tom. It was a great rivalry while it lasted. Unlike the OU v. UT, our rivalry has kind of died because we don't play every year. OU's rivalry with UT is kind of like our rivalry with CU. Neither team likes the other team, and the fans hate each other. I don't think OU fans for the most part hate NU, and I don't think the NU fans for the most part hate OU. I root for OU, and I rooted for them against LSU 2 years ago and last year against USC. If UT makes it to the title game, I'll be rooting for USC or VT. I just don't like Texas, and I don't like a lot of their fan base.

I rooted against UT last year because of Mack Brown crying to the media about his team not getting a fair deal.

Yep the talked to TOM and Berry. BOth were very respectful of each other Switzer said he would vote for TOm Govenor. I particulary liked the part of the discussion where they said they would like to see some of TO 95-97 players on the team now. Berry said... I bet they would like to see your playbook back again now too>> Ha ha . It made us all laugh anyway. All in all it was a good interview/discussion between to football greats.

That's already part of their scholarship. Student athletes get around a $500 stipend each month for other expenses.
