Can all of you please take a look at this?

Eric the Red

Team HuskerBoard
Chad and I put this together and wanted you guys to take a look and poke holes in it. Tell us why this is not going to work, dumb, brilliant, what we are missing, why we are geniuses etc. We would like to get this out ASAP if it makes sense.

This program allows us to help each other. How?

  1. You donate (members or guests) - starting at only $25 / yr. (or name your value here).
  2. We provide HUGE Discounts on Gear (from HuskerNation.com) & Tickets (from TicketHippo.com).
  3. Buy Husker Gear & Tickets using our COUPON CODES for discounted prices, and your donation "pays for itself" (no minimum order requirements).
  4. Our partner/TicketHippo's NORMAL prices are lower than Stubhub, and MUCH lower than Ticket Express. Our discount codes make the prices UNBEATABLE for any event year-round: Concerts, Theater, Vegas Shows, Comedy, Broadway shows, NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL games etc.

Events Eligible for Discounts (+Husker Games):

*Prices currently listed on TicketHippo are BEFORE the discounts - simply input our coupon code during check-out for discount.

*Limited memberships available: The program will pay for itself & beyond if everyone takes advantage. Because of this, we can only allow a limited # of memberships initially. Offering these discounts is risky for us - if EVERYONE buys a high qty of gear & tickets, it would cost us more than we make, so we need to pilot the program. Costs will never increase for old members "grand-fathered" in. Sign-up now to beat the increase.

Donor Packages: [top]

We offer 5 packages to make it as affordable as possible for everyone to participate. We appreciate all donations including smaller increments - name your donation value here. We also now offer a Monthly Donation program here.

For those who use the board on a regular basis, check out how cheap the board is per day of use.

Letter from the Founders: [top]

Since the beginning of Huskerboard in 2003, we've run the site with a small-community attitude, treating members like we would treat someone at our tailgate party. We truly believe that every member of Huskerboard is integral to the board's success, and we have literally re-invested every dollar earned back into the board.

It's our motto to be respectful to all members, from all teams, and all perspectives. We feel that's what sets Huskerboard apart, and you have responded in record numbers every month - making Huskerboard.com the most active Free Husker Message Board on the internet.

We hope you feel the value received from Huskerboard in the form of info, laughs, and even friendships is well worth the donation values. For most, it's the difference between 1 less coffee / month, or not super-sizing that soda. We just ask that everyone participates if you're able - and please don't disregard this in hopes that enough others will contribute.

We are trying to be proactive to prevent the need to ever impose member fees. The fact is the board is not cheap to operate - so if you do enjoy it please take this opportunity to help maintain your community - we truly do need your help.

Sincerely,

Chad & Eric - HuskerBoard Founders

*Donate $1 or $1,000 - you call it! We appreciate any & all donations - whether it's a buck to drop in the pot, or you'd simply like to contribute to the board without joining the program - here's your chance to help however you can!

*Donations will accrue! Make periodic donations, and once you reach a certain level you will receive those full benefits for 12 months following your last donation. e.g. Donate $5 now, $10 in March, and another $10 in August, and you will receive Bronze Membership status through August 2012.

*You may also donate without joining the program. Simply make a note in the "comments" section during the donation process and we will not enroll you.

*Donor information is PRIVATE and will never be shared.

I'd be willing to donate to the board. I've chipped in $5 to BuckeyePlanet each of the last couple of years and I use HuskerBoard way more than BP. I know it can't be cheap to operate this site, and tossing a few bucks to the pot isn't a hardship.

I presume this will be voluntary - that needs to be stressed up front and at all times. And that it's not a membership fee; you can still use HuskerBoard even if you don't donate.

A question - is this related to server costs? If so, I would suggest that we ramp up the discussion on limits of pics in signatures, and curb the amount of upload-able pictures we allow members. Images take up a ton of space.

Which makes me wonder, me and many other folks have had a lot of fun gif-bombing threads. Does that ramp up server load if the image is hosted elsewhere?

I really like the idea Eric, it's a win-win for the board and the members. I agree with knapp about the server discussion. I'm more than willing to chip in and get some of those discounts and I know the little lady will definately understand considering the amount of Husker gear I purchase.

I think it's a great idea. It doesn't impose any fees for use, but at the same time creates a potential revenue stream to help offset some of the cost. Best of all, the benefits (beyond keeping HuskerBoard running) are tangible and represent what Husker fans want most - gear and ticket prices.

Speaking of ticket prices - the claim of being cheaper than competing ticket outlets. What happens if somehow one of those outlets drops prices, either generally or for a specific event, below TicketHippo levels? Will Ticket Hippo match that lower price? My worry is that donors might think that their donation guarantees that anything they order through TicketHippo will be lower than those other sites. Might want to re-word it to take that into consideration.

Do you guys think it there could be a smaller, non-yearly donation 'package' to make it more accessible to more people? -- or do you suppose that would cut into the $25/yr bronze package numbers? I'm not a business guy so I don't know how you'd make the call there.

Also,

are we going to be giving these guys public recognition (separate user category, some sort of simple user icon), or will it be more important to maintain this "everybody is an equal member" status quo? I can see both sides of the argument there and might even favor the latter. Just came to mind so I thought I'd toss it out and let the wiser people consider ;)

I think the public recognition is the donor logo, right? This is what I got when I gave $5 to BuckeyePlanet the last couple of years:

It sits on the header of all my posts. Here's a post, for example.

Instead, HuskerBoard gives out these:

Pretty much the same thing. We'll have to put it somewhere that the members can't modify, something only the Admins have access to.

On BuckeyePlanet they have a Spring fundraising drive. The reason they do it is the site's founder has some pretty significant medical problems and they need the money to run the site because he can't work anymore. His wife helps quite a bit. It's a family thing for them. I think if we did ours in the Spring it would hit the 'hardcore' HuskerBoard members who are most likely to donate, and it would not bother the seasonal folks who just show up for the football season.

Who just called me seasonal??? j/k

I think the majority would embrace the idea, but there are always going to be some that think they shouldn't have to pay for anything EVAH. me

GBR

I'm considering changing the name of the program to discount program versus donor.

Want to be more of a fan/member appreciation thing versus a potential "welfare" program.

If you change it to discount program then I think a lot of people won't contribute, since they'll see it almost like a coupon.

Personally, I buy one, maybe two things from our store a year. I already have tons of Husker gear and a discount on a couple of items isn't worth $25. But I'll give $25 a year to help HuskerBoard stay afloat. Maybe I'm alone in that.

$25. that's cheap for the influence and power I wield as a mod :)

whatever it takes boss

I'd rather donate to the board than either political party(which I don't donate to)

Agree with this; also great idea on the spring drive! Also, yeah, I totally missed the Huskerboard donor logos things. The last part of this post is why I suggested adding another tier -- maybe a "if you have donated anything under $25 this past year, you get to wear this forum badge but don't get anything else." So that users could give $1-$24 if they wanted to. And it would reach the audience that doesn't want/need to buy stuff from the store.
