Cosgrove

The general consensus on the other boards I read is Cosgrove should be fired. "He's horrible as a DC." While I tend to agree with that, I'm willing to give him one more year. After that, if there's no improvement, I'll be joining the ranks of the "fire Cosgrove" group.

I'm curious what others on this board think?

eh, it could be blamed on the play calling...but a lot of it was just people not being able to get by the blockers. And that's just the players' fault. We weren't blown away by certain plays...we were just beat. The defense shut down second half after that crazy second quarter drive OSU had.

This is all vague...but I remember one specific play (in which I was screaming at the TV)...where a Husker defender was watching the wrong guy while the QB ran right by him on an option. It was almost as if he didn't see who had the ball, and just was concentrating on his man coverage. The guy ran right past him!! I almost thought he was trying to prevent the pitch to the guy in the backfield, but instead the QB went up for about 10 yards!! It just amazed me why he didn't go after the guy with the ball!!

I'll have to watch the play again and maybe point it out.

Although I'm not one of those fans who can name plays/formations and thinks he knows what should be called and when....it still comes down to the players. I'm sure the plays work, but they're the ones who are supposed to make it work. There were so many times we were marked man to man and they still made the passes. There were so many times we could anticipate the run, and they still ran right around us.

The defense just got beat. And it hurts. Because....

WHO THE F@#% ARE OSU?!?!?!!

ugh, the Big XII seems to be so flakey these last few years. Teams win games shouldn't, and lose games they shouldn't. Crazy.

BC probably wont fire him. I can't blame this loss entirely on the defense. With out the turnovers we they got for us it would have been uglier than it was. This is a game we should have been able to win but didn't. We ran into a team wanting a big win and we were playing with a team that still had their heads on the texas game.

Nah, I am pretty sure that would be dumb.

It bugs me to no end on how fans are ready to just throw people aside.

THEY HAD A BAD GAME. PERIOD. Let's not go apesh#t.

Sometimes I wonder if coaches laugh at how far off fan's opinions are from what is really going on with the team. Sometimes, it has to be laughable.

I believe Bowden said tonight, "If you listen to the fans, you'll soon be sitting by them."

we all had high expectations for this year. and guess what, those expectations are still achievable. the Huskers control their own destiny and must play like they want to meet the goals that they set for themselves. NU can still win the north, still get the rematch against texas and can still go to a BCS bowl game.

the sky is not falling, things can be and will get better.

:yeah

Cosgrove is just flat a disappointment. He coaches a horrible defensive game. We are lacking in some areas on defense but strong in some others. I'll have to have my grandma call him and clue him in because he doesn't know it yet. Should he go? If Calley wants to keep his job and blame someone, yes. We don't have good coaching and it's evident. But then again our offensive play calling isn't any better.

We all had such high hopes for the defense this season. It really bites to watch the defense give up all those yards and points. The players at times just looked like they had no motivation. I've never been a fan of Coz, but the only way BC gets rid of him is if he is pressured from Pederson. And that's not going to happen this season.

Cosgrove has confused me at times this year as well, but overall he has down well for what he has had to work with. Do you think we are going to win every game with Grixby and Jones as our corners? The talent is not quite there yet. There are just some areas that need improvement, we will get there. We live in a "on-demand" world now, everyone wants immediate results and are ready to throw people under the preverbial bus when things dont go as expected. Remember Cosgrove turned down a position with the Vikings to stay with us, I think he enjoys the challenge and opportunity to get us back to the top. Patience my friends..........

Well consider this now. While I agree the talent level is lacking, some of that has to be attributed to the coaching. For instance, in 2002, NU's defense ranked 55th in Total Defense. That was the same year we had the likes of Fabian Washington, Josh/Daniel Bullocks and DeJuane Groce in the secondary. In 2003, the year Pelini was DC, we finished 11th in Total Defense with the likes of Fabian Washington, Josh/Daniel Bullocks, Huston, Thorne, and Tiedtke. That same year we led the nation in pass efficiency defense (88.66 rating), ranked No. 2 in scoring defense (14.5 points per game) and were No. 11 in passing yards per game (177.8 yards per game). In 04, the first year for Cosgrove, we finished 56th in Total Defense with most of the same players.

To me that doesn't bode well for Cosgrove. How can a defense go from being so dominate one year to be mediocre the next?
