Cowardly Act

His own men intentionally shot him because he was such a coward, and he dropped his gun and ran toward the enemy with a white flag.

Ok. This coward kept on dropping his gun and running to the back of the line when the bullets started flying. So, his CO told him, "I am going to kick your a$$ myself if you keep running away!"

Now, once the battle started, the coward tried to be brave. However, he got shot! So he says, "Screw this, I'd much rather get beat up than get killed!" So he dropped his gun and ran to the back of the line, where his CO was waiting for him...

NO, but it's the right train of thought.

 
as the enemy approached his position, he was afraid of being killed by mortar rounds, tank rounds, hand grenades (frag). so he got up out of his position and decided to run away and was shot by the enemy.

As the enemy approached, he was shot, and decided to run and hide behind the artillery, which was also being targeted. He figured there would be a little safer than on the front line.
