THIS ONE WORKED EARLIER, BUT I DIDN'T ACTUALLY POST IT. NOW I TRIED IT AGAIN AND IT'S NOT EMBEDDING (AT LEAST THAT I CAN SEE)

giphy.com embeds their gifs in a shell, so what you're seeing/quoting is actually a movie (typically but not always an MP4 file), not a gif.  The gif itself is hidden in the code of the website.

There are a few different ways you can get the actual gif out of that page, but it depends on the browser you're using.  A google search for your browser should show you how to snag the gif you want.

When you get it, I would recommend hosting it on an image hosting site like Imgur so you don't lose it if giphy decides to delete the gif you're using.  That way you always retain a copy of your own.

I posted the same URL, though. Had to double check. I'm not sure why it didn't just paste the first time. I think it's the rich text editor. Sometimes it's so rich, it thinks it knows it's a URL and pastes the whole A HREF shebang.

So selecting the (rich text) URL from the above post and copy/pasting won't work:

But pasting it into a plain text editor, copying that, and pasting it back here does:

giphy.gif

knapp's right that if you go to this URL in the browser, you'll be shown a web page with an mp4.

When we first upgraded the board software in August there was a toggle to switch between Rich and Plain Text. I would really like to see that come back.

Wew dead thread.  Well... didn't want to start a new one.  This is just about the emoticons that come up when we click to express our feeling about a post (the "+1" square on the lower right of posts).  Some sites that have that feature allow for a mouse over of the emoticons once the post is posted, so readers can do that to see who posted the "laughy" or the "thanks" "fire" or whatever.  There might be a list of two or more user names or just one etc when you mouse over.  Can that be done here?  It's handy to me at other sites that have that beacuse it makes for another reason to post a response, "I see you laughed at my post about my grand pappy falling in the well and drowning" or whatever.
