Just a real satisfying victory, I guess is how you’d put it. I thought Nebraska played brilliant defense all night. One of the most important keys wasn’t the pressure or the interceptions, but rather their tackling. I saw one missed tackle all night. Other than that, the game plan was to make Smoker throw short and first man in makes the tackle. There was plenty of flow to the ball.
There were a couple of interesting looks NU Blackshirts gave Smoker (Don’t you get the feeling, before I start the X’s and O’s, that Smoker is a fat pu&&y. Seemed like he was doing an awful lot of bitching to anyone that would listen. Just kinda a moaning and complaining, kinda because he wasn’t getting his way.??!?!). First off there wasn’t that much blitzing. Some stunting up front from the front four. Super D played DE most of the night, rarely dipping back into coverage. But what it appeared was NU relied on its front four to get pressure. There were several time where there was none. But then NU had 7 guys in a type of nickel coverage. Both middle backers played an extra two yards back. But when the QB is in the shotgun most of the night, even if they run a delay with the HB, there’s time to move up. Secondary are the MVP’s. Bullocks, No. 14, had several nice plays. Baited receivers several times. Which makes you wonder if Bland will start next year? He is always hurt. When they did blitz they sent two guys to the same side, sometimes to the same gap, to get Smoker to role. Solid game plan.
Lord played well. (Not saying it's Lord's fault, but we missed the knockout blow several times on missed passes.) Several factors contributed to this nice all-around game. For one it was his last game. He basically had nothing to lose. He was loose, calm, relaxed and let it hang out. He dropped back several time without any thoughts of running and drilled several completions to the receiver’s chest. Secondly, he was away from Lincoln. Enough said. Third, MSU defensive secondary is really that bad. Nothing to take away from Lord. He had career highs in several categories, including his 60+ yard run, but they were bad. They were more used up than a Peter North cum rag.
Pork chop ran hard. His legs are friggin’ gigantic. Where was he earlier?
As for the future. First the short term, the coaching situation. I have no f'ing idea. I don’t even care to ponder it any more. But I am quite sure one will be announced by Sunday. I hope we get to see some of our current coaches stay. Thank you gentleman. I think Bo could be our man, but we can’t expect immediate results. Bo proved the other day that the players will play very hard for him.
The long term future looks good. Our sophomore class this year is solid. Remember we still have Dailey. Most of our line comes back and Schuler and Austin, two players that will go big time. Besides the two outside backers, most of the defense is back. We will need a leader, Super D no more.
Next newsletter, break down coming on the new head coach, until then thank you Huskers, you played hard all year, because of the events that took place during the season makes all of us Husker fans want even more. The way you guys perform make the next 246 days that much harder to wait for. AWWWWWWWwwww…… Opening day
