Defensive Play

Our DBs make me nervous for this game and going forward. Haven't been good tackling this season. When Corbin ripped off the long TD run everyone was taking the inside and Dismuke whiffed on the tackle because he didn't pinch down. Barry had some cement feet as well. What was most disappointing was Jackson's "attempt" of a tackle - didn't even lay a hand on him.

His effort on this play made me angry to say the least.  If I saw that from one of my players he would be coming out for a few plays.

Watch this view:

It looks to me like he's running with his WR and doesn't see the RB coming at first. Then when he does see him he tries to adjust but the WR knocks him off balance.

That's my opinion also.  Doing a good job of covering the WR.  Then, when he sees the RB, it's too lake and the WR has enough contact on him to not allow him to get the tackle.

I wouldn't call it lack of effort.
I disagree and have seen this several times this year and last year of him not wanting to get his nose dirty.

I saw that view the first time.. I dont think he gave good effort. He just stuck his arm out while he had his other arm on the rec.  He could have gone low with his shoulder or tried to grab a leg.  Instead he just sticks his arm out.  He had a lack of effort just like this on one of Illinois other scores.

Would you say it made your blood red?

In all seriousness, not his best effort but like others said above, his focus was on the WR but could’ve closed on Corbin better. Overall tremendous improvement compared to earlier in his career. If you can’t see that, then you’re looking at his play with far too much bias.

Sorry you don't see it.  I see a huge difference.

:yeah

Also, I think what happened on that play was he was running with the WR and saw the runner late.  He was kind of stuck between getting blocked by the WR and turning around too quickly and risking the runner cutting, catching him flat-footed.  So he kind of tried to slow-play it - slow down but keep running forward to keep his options open - but he didn’t quite judge it correctly.

It looks like he had a perfect opportunity to slow down in front of the receiver and get a block in the back and defend defeat the play in thatway.   It was borderline a block in the back as it was.   That would have been a great defensive play.

Dismuke took a HORRIBLE angle. Looked like Davis was blitzing the B gap and Dismuke was supposed to come off the edge, but wow, he whiffed big time. Have to give some credit to Corbin - very quick and shifty back.

I don't think Jackson will ever be a great tackler, open field or not. His coverage, but for one ball he actually got fingertips on vs CU, has been pretty good, I would say.

The jury is still out on whether we're going to get a group of guys that can cover and tackle, like in '99 with Mike Brown, Ralph Brown, Keyou Craver, and Clint Finley all on the field at once.

'09 was very good, too - O'Hanlon, Gomes, Hagg, Asante, Amukamara. Miss those guys.

I watched the Ohio State highlights... didn’t see a lot of pressure on their QB. One time I think he was on his phone looking for a beach condo in Panama City for Spring Break.

I want to see our D line fresh the entire game.

Every down I want our D linemen in their QB’s face saying ,”Howdy do, Welcome to Lincoln!”

Every time they tuck him in on the field turf I want them to say, “Hope you’re having a nice stay.”
