Discussing injuries before they're made official

My thoughts are this, if it's speculation we need to put a stop to it. If someone posts that so and so got hurt, where's the link to prove it? From our standpoint the board blows up on some B.S. report until it's proven. I like that you locked it.

I can see some of the younger members thinking that it's just fine. They want their info NOW. Hearsay or not. Other members, especially us more experienced and parental inclined would not want to see it here first. $.02

I have zero problem with locking that thread. We've already been contacted by Jamrog about posts on the board, and while I don't want to kowtow to an outside source, they kind of are the reason we exist. Pissing off the Huskers isn't a good idea.

Better to err on the side of caution. Good job, zoogies. :thumbs

We probably piss off the Huskers by existing :) But what can you do, I like message boards.

With Bo shutting down the media for now, wonder if we're going to even hear about it anytime soon.

I mean this with all respect for you. The problem with the bold up there is that's exactly what limiting free speech is, and that's usually how it happens. Someone thinks it would be better for everyone if this or that wasn't discussed until this or that happens. In my opinion, that's not the place of a moderator to decide. You are certainly under no obligation to discuss or read the speculation, but closing down a forum in which everyone was consistently differentiating between rumor and fact seems needless. I understand it's a tough call. But by the time you locked it the rumor had already begun. This is what I meant up above about life in the internet age. We might as well not kid ourselves.
I can sort of agree with this, actually. Is this (locking a thread like that) a call that we can make? I mean sure we have the power to. Sure we might feel it's the best thing to do. But should we?

I am thinking that in the future, leave the threads but post a short reminder about the dangers of speculating about injuries. And then lock it if things start to spiral out of hand - and not before, based on worry.

There's a lot of stuff I feel is better off left off of message boards, but there's also an element of 'let's be realistic' to it. And creating a stifling environment is not the goal either. I think we can accomplish mostly the same things without a pre-emptive lock in the future...I feel the lock was a nice gesture, and well-intentioned, but still not necessarily correct. It does feel a bit needless and I can see why people would question that.

Husker_x has a good point about the internet age. The Information Genie is out of the bottle, and we have to adapt. But that doesn't mean that we have to allow everything in the interest of free speech, either. Just as if you went to a restaurant and started disturbing the other patrons, you can be asked to leave. This is not a curtailment of your 1st Amendment Rights, it's the right of the shopkeeper to keep his shop in the manner in which he likes.

I agree here with zoog's....It is a message board. Reminders are fine. If we start locking things like this, we will loose our minds.

Thanks for the input Eric :)

From what i am told with the debacle last week they wanted to keep this injury under wraps. Very few people know about this but it will be coming out shortly. Im told its season ending. We need to train some back-up D-line to do some blocking PRONTO
So naturally, you go and report it on a message board... <_<

Well I want my Fellow Huskerboard Members to be on top of the latest news. Im not calling his parents to try and find out information.
This really bugs me though. I'm not going to say anything on this in the thread, but I want to. "They" = the staff/the player involved, want to keep this under wraps. "95huskers" decided not to respect these wishes and do just the opposite of what they wanted. And I don't think he really grasps that point either. It's the Internet, dude. You're not keeping just your fellow Huskerboard Members on top of the news, but the entire Internet, Husker fans and non Husker fans alike. Palm, meet face. As long as people don't get this and are just trying to help out their fellow "fans" by being the insider that breaks the stories, posts like this are going to happen. Too bad for Bo/mystery possibly injured player.
