Nebraska: Optimism is in order for these Cornhuskers, who capped last season with a big win over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. They posted an impressive recruiting class in 2005 but were not as strong in 2006. The abundance of junior college players in those classes also is cause for long-term concern.
Bill Callahan and his staff are on the right track, but the time for filling immediate holes should be over. This roster now needs to be molded with high school athletes. Of Nebraska's 25 signees from the Class of 2006, nine are from the junior-college ranks. While these kids provide immediate depth and potential production, they provide no long-term stability.
As of now, it looks like Nebraska might be moving away from the junior-college ranks and toward recruiting high-school athletes on more of a full-time basis. The Cornhuskers have landed six verbal commitments, all from high-school players. Wide receiver Niles Paul (Omaha, Neb.-North) is a great fit for the west-coast offense in Lincoln. Cornerback Shawn Sullivan (Brenham, Texas) originally committed to TCU but recently changed his pledge to Nebraska.
Expect Nebraska to continue to develop a strong presence in Texas and California as it works to regain national prominence.
