He probably knows football like more of us fans that are really passionate about college football and I am guessing he has a lot of connections. BUT what he really knows is which fans he can "attack" or "befriend".
That is really his #1 job and he knows it so he plays that role.
NU fans are crazy, in a good way. He could have just as easily poked fun at Purdue or Northwestern or Iowa but those teams have no fan base, no internet fans, no clicks.
He is not really paid to know football he is paid to talk about football
I hardly ever see or listen to him but he sure does know how to work his gig.

ESPN keeps Dumbo, but fires Robert Griffin III & Samantha Ponder.
Can't say that I know if RG3 or Samantha Ponder are any good, but I can't imagine they are worse than Dumbo.

RG3 seems like a good dude, but I really couldn’t stand him as a broadcaster.
Theres a trend I’m not a fan of that seems to be getting more popular in the booth……………NON STOP COMMENTARY. A need to fill up every second.
Romo does it. Greg Olsen is the absolute worst. RG3 did it too. It’s almost as bad as listening to my wife talk to her friends.

I don't think its a new trend its just remnants or the way it is done on a different medium, the radio. While doing a radio broadcast you don't want "dead air" or silence. I think this creeps its way into television broadcasts when there is a lull in action. They probably have producers in their ears telling them to say something.

I think it's that and people not understanding that different sports commentary is different. For instance, baseball is very different than football. There is a ton of just relaxing time when the commentators fill up airtime with just relaxed conversation. Meanwhile, football isn't like that. The play by play guy needs to take up most of the time explaining what's going on. Who is subbing in and out. Down and distance. Situational explanation...etc. The color guy needs to just add in a few comments after each play, or explain something on an instant replay. He's not there to carry on a deep long conversation.

If it were up to me, I'd watch almost all sports on mute. I understand what is going on and they have so much info on the screen now that I rarely need to listen to the overpaid morons tell me what is going on.
Even if I'm only casually watching a game, it only takes a few seconds to get caught up.

So... because every time over the last (cough) 10 years of husker football losing when I watched live I started watching the 60 minute replay. I've found I actually enjoy the day more when I don't spend 4 hrs of it watching live. That said, I think (jinx or no jinx) I might spend saturday's on the couch again this fall but ugh... that also means tolerating the knuckleheads in the booth or muting and tuning into the radio broadcast.

I'm much more of a college hoops fan, so if the football team is losing and has virtually no chance to come back, I change the channel and check in during commercials of whatever I'm watching. With basketball, I find that if I'm yelling at the TV (refs, poor play) I'm better off changing the channel & checking in the same way as football.

ESPN is in the biznass of making money...they are going to get rid of anyone that is expensive and doesn't serve a purpose.
No one cares about the person doing the games or the sideline interviews. Ted Bundy could call a Husker game and I would still watch it..."The huskers with a chance to ice the game here...just like I iced the life of Mary Pat Patterson..."
