Embedding Tweets

Oh yeah, that's probably what it is. Those things sound similar to what Ghostery did for me. But mine left a console message. I didn't disable Ghostery, but I did enable the Twitter widget (and WOW, do some other sites look different now! I never knew.)

I tested this on FF last night (no plugins) and I could see it.

I suppose if it's still utterly invisible when it's blocked, the link below is not doing much...

Maybe, maybe not. It really just depends on what the user is using.

At least if the embed is blocked, they still get something in the post instead of a blank post. They could click the link and see what happens.

To be honest, if someone is using Noscript, ghostery, etc. they should have some realization that perhaps these things are altering their web experience. Often times for good in the case of ad blockers, but sometimes it's blocking things you might find useful. It's a double edged sword in that way.

I've been pretty gunshy since getting a virus through a banner ad a couple of years ago. I'm sure I miss out on stuff, but missing out on the plethora of banner ads is fine by me.

For example, I wouldn't ever go to journalstar.com without popup blockers & adblock engaged. That site is a mess without blockers.

Is this something we want to roll out to the members? I would hope so. And if so, when we inform them of it we can state that do not track or ad block add on software can prevent the actual tweet being seen. For that reason the URL to the tweet always appars below and members can click it to see the tweet if they don't want to disable the add on that blocks the actual tweet.

Agreed. Going back from an ad-blocked experience is eye opening. It's insane.

Yes, I think so and I agree that an explanation will help.

I've had two different members ask how I'm doing this already this morning. Do we have something to put out there for them? I think there is interest in using it.

I can put an announcement together if no one else has something they're working on. Where should it be posted?

Works pretty well. You may need to refresh the page after you edit a post with a tweet in it.

The media tag works with any link that has twitter.com in it and the word status or statuses.

It's implemented in the media tag area of admincp.

Please let me know if you see any issues and happy embedding!
Working great and people are liking it.

Is there any way to be able to see the actual Tweet right when you post it? If you start a thread with and embedded Tweet you can see it right away - probably because it redirects you to the new thread so the page is refreshed. If you simply reply, it doesn't refresh the page so all you get is the link. Not a big deal, just curious as it might add some confusion.

Ironically, any other time I don't like the page to refresh when I post because then I don't miss any other replies that have been posted while I was reading or typing. So perhaps it's fine how it is.

Yea, I think has to do with when the javascript that makes the pretty embed runs.

The way quick replies work, I don't think the browser ever runs that js. We'd have to find a way to hook into a quick rely and run that JS after the reply so that the browser renders the embed.

Should be doable, just a question of how

noscript could definitely do this. Or do not track.

BING!!!! Good job, El Davo.

Also, there is a known issue with this feature and certain script/adblock browser extensions where only the link code will show, not the embedded tweet. This is an issue with the extension on your browser, NOT with HuskerBoard.

I know this because I currently have this issue. I'll post a solution when I figure out exactly what's causing this. If someone else finds a fix first, please post it here.
Figured out this issue. I've been using an anti-tracking addon for Firefox called Blur (f.k.a. "DoNotTrack"). For some reason, that was blocking the embedded tweets. I removed it, and voila! I see the embedded tweets.

If you use Blur, either get rid of it or figure out how to white-list HuskerBoard.
