Emmet Johnson in Transfer Portal

Let us agree to disagree. There is time to make money and there is time for growth and development. However, there is no convincing you. You already made up your mind and decided to revert to name calling and condescension. Have a good night. You are right. You are always right. I apologize for being naive. I will not make that mistake again. Please forgive my ignorance.

"Fartface" is an example of name-calling. I've replied to you twice (not including this reply). I think you're confusing me with the ~17 other people who think your expectations are unreasonable.

Almost everything. You are whining about college football being about money being a new thing. It's always been about money. We get entertained, TV stations and schools make money. Now the players are getting a much more fair piece of the pie than before.

To the rest, why in the hell should we expect an 18-22 year old not sell out but all of the old people involved get loaded? That makes no sense. You are extremely naive. And the idea that we will get behind because players aren't loyal to us is laughable. It is working this way everywhere. To answer your question about what's to stop people coming and going constantly; they need to introduce contracts that will protect the employer also. Then when we have more players staying at schools, you can tell yourself it's because they're loyal and are here to get an education.
This is a wild take. If you had a job offer that allowed you to better provide for your spouse and children, you’re most likely taking it.

Some of these kids are providing for siblings, parents and even their own kids. They deserve it, and we definitely don’t show Emmett loyalty this year when Satt sat him and didn’t even show him love. Despite him being our best 1A. We probably would’ve had one of the best 1-2 punches in the B10 if he and Dowdwll see the time together.

We’ve all seen jobs not be loyal to people, and we’re about to see 42 players get cut from the team because of the new NCAA rules. Where’s the loyalty?

I could not agree more with the first part.  When coaches have 8 figure contracts & the sport is generating billions, it's unreasonable to think an education was equitable.  I'll even take it a step further, shame on the NCAA for waiting until their hand was forced in state legislatures.

I could not disagree more with the second part.  I know where you are coming from, but just because behavior is standard outside your org doesn't mean it should be expected or excepted inside your org.  This requires leadership setting the culture inside their org, screening for prospects that are cultural fits, and proactively managing them as "employees".

What a conversation.  I mean, it's telling, as to the times.  The Academics vs The Opportunists?

I guess there's always been a mix of those things.

Let us assume that EJ did all this as a plan to get more money and we give him more money. What is stopping Dowdell from doing the same, and then the next guy and so on. Where does it stop?
Right now nothing is stopping them and it ends when the school says thanks but no thanks, you aren’t worth that price.   It’s called supply and demand, but with year to year commitments.

When the driver is money then let us stop calling them student athletes. Instead they are professional players who are using college to showcase their talent and academics have nothing to do with college football then.
Many of us stopped calling them student athletes long ago.  When they were getting paid under the table and taking classes just to stay eligible

Instead they are professional players who are using college to showcase their talent and academics have nothing to do with college football then. However, if that is the norm, and players are now getting paid then people shouldn’t use the “they are still teenagers” excuse when they don’t perform
Again, lots of people on Huskerboard have said its big boy football now.  The are getting paid and now they need to learn how to deal with the criticisms that come with professional style sports.

I still believe that you can’t buy loyalty. You are either a Husker through and through or a mercenary. I guess I would rather be in a coma until this s#!tshow improves. Or I will just focus on volleyball. At least I can feel Husker pride in that team.
They are getting paid just the same.

Using “laid” once could be a typo. Using it twice though…… :B)

So one other thing of quick note on all of this.  Not a single player that has announced before today that they were going into the portal actually did.  The portal doesn't even open until today.  They announced their "intention" to go into the portal.

Small detail, but one that needs to be remembered with these conversations.

Of course, anyone announcing today and beyond will actually be in the portal, and not with the team anymore.

I think you quoted the wrong post.

To answer your question about what's to stop people coming and going constantly; they need to introduce contracts that will protect the employer also.
I agree I think this is ultimately the direction the business will trend. I'm not really sure what it will look like but I also don't think what's happening right now is sustainable or good for the sport.

We all seem to collectively agree that it would be bad if players in the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc., just had free reign to accept new contracts and deals and change teams every single season, which is why the contracts and players' unions are in place.

I think a few places to start:

  • some kind collective bargaining framework to set standardized guidelines for NIL compensation, equity and transparency
  • a tiered salary cap system similar to the NBA's luxury tax or NFL's salary cap (universities would have a maximum total NIL pool they can distribute across their roster. This wouldn’t necessarily mean capping individual player deals outright, but rather capping the aggregate spend)
  • retention incentives and transfer penalties (e.g. players get more funds the longer they stay somewhere and modest financial penalties tied to transfers linked to NIL incentives)
  • required auditing and public reporting
