Eyeroll and Other Reactions

This seems to be always causing issues.  I think people are making WAAAAAYYYY to big of a deal about it but it's an issue none the less.

My thought is to make everything available for people to be able to see who reacted with what.  I think that will make people less likely to use the "negative" responses and let the recipients deal with it better.  Another option would be to just go back to the +1s and nothing else.

Thoughts?

It also seems like it's a core group of people with which it's an issue, either by being the recipient or the deliverer. I wager 90-95% of the board handles it all appropriately so it irks me that it's a small portion of people making it a problem.

Nevertheless, I personally lean towards removing all negative reactions while keeping only the positive ones, if that's possible. Namely, removing the Eyeroll and possibly even the Confused face. I like the idea of being able to keep the trophy and laughing reactions if we're able. Alternatively, simply going back to +1 and nothing else, for two reasons:

1) I think public reactions will lead to more situations of people calling one another out in inappropriate places

2) It would re-incentivize someone to actually engage if they disagree, rather than just publicly react in a negative way and not contribute; essentially, we'd be going back to how things were when the '-1' rep was eliminated

Each reaction can be turned on and off separately.  There is also a -1 that is built into the board software but is turned off currently.  So it is definitely possible to disable the "negative" reactions and just leave the +1, laugh and trophy.

I agree with the idea that it is a small faction of our members who abuse the reactions system. @Mavric are we able to suspend the function of this system for individual members? I think that would solve the real problem.

You can set up a group that does not have the ability to give any reactions and put them in that group.

I am for that. When members violate board use of the reactions system, we could suspend the use for two weeks, and if they do it as second or maybe third time, they loss the feature permanently.

My only qualm with that path is it would likely mean continued reliance on us to police the use of reactions and for board members to report activity they deem suspicious. It already feels a bit taxing and sort of like we're stuck in the weeds on it. I'd personally rather worry about board content management, situations of text-based trolling/personal attacks, and overall board participation, vs. whether or not someone is using an eye roll properly.

I hope that doesn't make me sound lazy or anything.   That's certainly not my intent. But, I do agree with those who say it brings a sort of negative attention to the conversation around here and doesn't contribute much positivity. I personally preferred when we had only positive reactions and then let people voice disagreements through debate rather than through reactions.

Also, it appears that deactivating them means no one can see any previous reactions of those types.  So I'm kind of tempted to make it so that people can see who's giving the reactions now.

Thoughts?

Well, not sure about you all, but I received our first claim of trolling associated with the 'Laugh' reputation reaction. @knapplc doesn't know who laughed at the below three posts, but he feels it's trolling (unsurprising). Of course, he has no idea who was 'Laughing' at the posts but he suspects it was the same person.

As I mentioned last time around, I'm generally uninterested in policing reactions. I don't think this is that big of a deal but knapplc is taking it as a personal injustice.

I'm particularly uninterested in policing this stuff now that all of the current reactions only result in positive reputation gains for the user. And, from what I can see, this appears to be a trivial and isolated incident.

I'm interested in any feedback or dissenting opinions, though.
