Eyeroll and Other Reactions

Anybody have thoughts/feedback on this? Namely:

1) Does knapplc's complaint hold water and should the people 'laughing' at his posts be considered "trolls"? My opinion is there's not enough there to warrant moderator intervention even though it's the same person, but I may be wrong.

2) Should we maintain status quo with the reactions at the moment? This is the first complaint I've heard about them since the whole eye troll situation last summer, so it seems like an isolated incident.

In all seriousness, I would say if a member is trolling someone with emojis, they should receive a warning. Even if it results in a positive reputation, as all of our current emojis do. I am not sure how many knapplc is complaining about or if they all occurred on the same day and in the same thread.

The last time we gave a worrying for the eye trolling was because someone followed a member around from thread to thread over a period of time posting many eye rolls. If the same pattern exists here, the result should be a warning.

Looks like they were mostly all same day, same thread, all related to similar points of a conversation.

But, I feel like this probably happens a lot on the board. I've seen people 'Laugh' at posts that clearly aren't funny and are more ridiculous in nature. I sometimes see this happen multiple times in the same thread but I don't usually even bat an eye at it. Perhaps that's on me, of course, but it just feels a bit too nebulous overall.

/posts outrageous claims

/can't believe anyone could possibly disagree with him

He would like to control every conversation.  He thinks that anyone who would dare disagree with him is either an idiot or a troll.

He needs to get over himself.

But he won't.

This has popped up again a couple of times in recent days... the request to publicize reactions. It's largely from the same group of people who have been beating the drum for awhile i.e. knapplc and Moiraine. But RedDenver threw in his support as well.

I'm just having a hard time believing that this request comes from a place of honest intentions. Those three are P&R regulars and that forum appears to be the primary reason they want to see reactions publicized. Moiraine has a distant but repeated history of personally attacking people. knapplc has been pushing the limitations of proper behavior for some time. Allowing them to see who laughs at certain posts or who +1's pro-Trump comments feels like it would just lead towards more inappropriate arguments in places they shouldn't be.

And knapplc suggested we do a 'trial' just to see how the board handles it, and honestly, I don't trust him. I think the trial is just an opportunity for him to gather information and ammunition, and if it becomes a problem, he can just wipe his hands of it, drop a little shrug emoji and then act like it wasn't a big deal. But the damage will have been done.

knapp is the biggest reason not to do it.  He will absolutely dig through two are three years worth of posts to find out who laughed at one of his posts from 2018.

Well said.

I think we could probably just put this conversation to bed then. Seems like most of us largely agree that the emojis aren't that big of a deal and seem to only be of real angst to a select number of posters. By and large, I think they're utilized appropriately and we probably don't need to give people the ammo.

knapp also agrees that they're not a big deal.  When it fits his agenda.  Except when he complains and says it's a big deal.  Until he's called on it and then it's no big deal again.

Two things:

First, although @Moiraine doesn't know who she's calling an a$$h@!e, she's definitely calling people a$$h@!es in this post. I reported the post for discussion purposes. Right now, I've only moved it to the Shed.

Second, I don't think she's necessarily wrong about @obert1 even though she doesn't know who it is. He almost never posts in P&R, but he 'laughs' at P&R posts constantly. Usually only certain members, too, and a lot of those are targeted at Moiraine. A lot of the posts he laughs at are pretty innocuous, too, making it seem like he's doing it just to be a jerk.

IMO this would be one of those rare situations where it's more straightforward abuse of the emoji, but I'm still a little ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about it. I don't see how it's much different than when knapplc pastes the over-sized laugh emoji into his responses to Archy constantly, but no board members seem to get fussed about that.

Moiraine can't handle reactions.  She's showed that over and over.  She requested the eyeroll emoji then was annoyed that people used it.  She complained enough that we finally took it away.  Now she's complaining again.

It's pretty much knapp and Moiraine that can't handle it.  They're always complaining about something.  If we "fix" this they'll complain about something else.

So either they'll have to get over it or we should just scrap the entire system.  Because they're never going to be done complaining about something.

She continues with the personal attacks:

She has now referred to other board members as a$$h@!es, cowards and idiots in the main forums, even if she doesn't know who she's directing the insults at. I think her behavior needs addressing to some degree.

----------

FWIW, I've watched Obert1 do this for several months now, but I've just let it be. Of her last 69 P&R posts, about 20 of them (almost 30%) have earned a laugh reaction from him specifically. I can't say I really blame her TBH. I'm fairly certain he's doing it just to be a jerk. Doesn't excuse her behavior, though.

Holy cow.  I used to think Moiraine was a pretty good poster.  But apparently now she has devolved into someone that would make the most immature Jr High boy I can think of look like Aristotle by comparison.

And I think knapp has gone off the deep end the last few years but she can barely wave at him as she dives by.

All the while both of them are complaining about other being immature.
