Five-Year Itch

While digging a garden, a man unearthed a large metal box filled with money and jewelry. For five years he spent none of the money and told no one what he had found. Then he suddenly bought a new house, a new car and many other things he had always wanted. Why?
If for five years he spent none of the MONEY he found, then was he living off the jewelry he had found in the box?

Waiting for a divorce the man did not want community property to apply. After the appropriate state imposed waiting period he was divorced, possibly remarried and bought new stuff(wasnt married to Michelle Pfeiffer).

OR he was a gardener for one of the rich and famous when he found the box

5 years later he retired and moved to the great state of Nebraska and purchased those items because said rich and famous never realized they were missing

Was the guy working in his own garden?

If not, then was the house he eventually bought the very house which had the garden with the buried treasure?
