Gilmore on recruiting

Primarily, Gilmore said, the Huskers want to find a tight end, another running back, a defensive end and a defensive back before Feb. 2. He said NU expects to sign a class of 20 to 21 players.

The unfinished class, ranked 17th nationally by rivals.com, places Nebraska behind No. 7 Ohio State in the Big Ten. Iowa is No. 24, the only other league team in the top 30.

i think we would and should take a couple more if the right guys wanted in (the juco DE, peat, lake, virgile, abdullah, onwausor, the kicker, etc.). unfortunately, that doesn't appear too likely. of course, gilmore could also be underplaying the amount of space to emphasize a sense of limited availability and push kids to committing sooner than later.

I do think he's a little dillusional when he said our slide into the crapper at the end of the year shouldn't impact recruiting. Last year when we finished strong it gave us a HUGE boost. Finishing strong would have helped a lot more than finishing the way we did.

Performance rarely matters that much in recruiting. Notre Dame blew chunks for years while pulling in top classes. Gilmore is right on that.

This is true, you can also look at a UCLA under CRN. They seem to pull in top talent every year, but dont ever seem to get over the hump of a winning season.

Not exactly difficult to recruit in California. Likewise for Texas. How many times on this recruiting board have people said "winning solves most issues" If it doesn't matter when it comes to recruiting then why is it tossed aroudn so much? Nebraska can't afford to have question marks about it's future when trying to pull some kid out of Florida.

For the most part, the top #25 team rankings follow very closely the AP rankings - with almost all of the AP top 25 being in rivals 25. A Clemson slips into there, or a TCU/Boise hangs at the bottom...but overall winning matters for teams not settled in the middle of recruiting hotbeds - or w/ the history/prestige of being Notre Dame.

It isn't everything - but I'll guarentee you Carl didn't get a whole bunch of calls from players after this years conference championship game like he did after last years.

Your right maybe UCLA was a bad example. But Honestly I hvant seen it tossed around the recruiting section as much. And kids will honestly tell you that winning isnt always a top priority. It more depends upon academics, facilities, and reltionship with their recruiter.

Agree - winning certainly isn't the top. And maybe when you're finishing the way we have the last 6-8 years it doesn't matter as much. Top 25 is top 25. If we can start competing at a higher level, and routinely make BCS bowls I think it will help a lot though. We'll be in the media more, discussed as a contender more, etc. In all honesty, these kids probably didn't even watch those last few games - and if they did their interest wasn't as great as ours was.

The late season melt down I'm sure lost us players. The defense is ran by demi-gods but for skill players needed to take the Offense to the next level I would not be excited to come to Nebreaska if I were at the top to my class. Of course some coaches can make the most of what they have and they can develop players and some coaches can not.

You don't think Turner, Green, and (possibly) Starling can take us to the next level?

All of those were signed up long before our crash and burn though. It would have probably been easier to sign one of the WR recruits had Kinnie went 12/165yrds and 3TD in the conference championship game, or Martinez had put up 350+ passing yards against Washington. It has to impact some of these recruits. Maybe not "winning" specifically - but our offensive struggles and direction (which ultimately led to our lack of winning).

If we had gone undefeated, and been playing in the MNC - does anyone think we'd still be at 16 recruits? IMO we'd have a full class. Whether it's directly tied to "winning" or the fact that some of our question marks that currently are causing hesitation wouldn't exist doesn't matter. The coaching staff would be set in stone. The direction of the offense would be well defined. Media coverage galore. It might not be "winning" specifically - but a lot of things that come with winning help recruiting. So maybe some late season losses don't matter - but the way we finished, vs the way Auburn finished undeniably gives them an advantage.
