So, if I put a google ad in my sig, would that be frowned upon? What about any other advertisements?

Yes, that would be frowned upon. Unauthorized advertisements in your signature are not allowed, the result would be banning...

Those are paid advertisements, if we allowed our members to post advertisements in their signatures it would be in direct competition with the boards paid advertisements. Server space, hosting, and the amount of bandwidth this board eats up is not cheap.

Dude, Chill. I was joking. I run several websites of my own and I know the difficulty of keeping them afloat. I don;t mind the ads nor do I mind not being able to place ads of my own.

Not really because it's an ad to a site that really isn't in competition with us or take away our users. I may be wrong though.
