I'm not sure it's disingenuous. You can make a case for handguns as personal protection, and because they are cheaper, more common and can fit in your pocket, they are going to have bigger total fatality numbers. But assault rifles are specifically made to kill as many people as quickly as possible, and are thus the preferred weapon for these mass killings having nothing to do with hunting animals or protecting your convenience store.

Reasonable people might agree an AR ban makes sense, doesn't infringe on our freedoms, and answers the outcry about politicians doing nothing. But if you treat handguns the same way and apply the same restrictions, you will immediately lose support for that reasonable AR ban. But you already knew that.

Sadly, this is never going to happen. 

We've collectively agreed that innocent people - including the brains of children being blasted against classroom walls - is worth the Right's moronic view on the Second Amendment. The political willpower, along with the backlash from mostly Conservative voters will never allow it. 

So all we can do is laugh at the morbidity of sending T&P and hope that our loved ones aren't caught on the wrong side of gun.

That would be automatic or semi automatic.

AR is a bit open to interpretation but to me it's semi automatic (or fully, but that's already highly regulated), magazine fed, barrel inline with the stock, and pistol grip. Maybe not all those features, but at least 3 of the 4.

From the outside looking it.  The entire thought process that you describe is the weirdest thing ever.  And....people who are inside just can't see it.

 
is it wrong that i hope that gunman is lying in the woods somewhere with a hole in his head?  am afraid the other option is he is hidden by 1 of his right wing militia buddies.
