I agree with the article's sentiment. Before we got our dog I did a bunch of dog breed research and found a bunch of pictures of what beagles and terriers and labs and all sorts of dogs used to look like. Most breeds used to be simple and elegant. The dog industry is completely awful and many dogs now are a completely ruined form of life. Breeders rarely care about the dogs, all they see is $$$. Especially the purebred snobs. They care a lot more about the little "genetically certified purebred" certificates than they do the dogs themselves. Many breeds like bulldogs, boston terriers, and many of the tiny lap dog breeds have horrible physical problems, impaired breathing, and other serious health problems...and they have those problems by design. To the big breeders and handlers, dogs are just a game. It's sort of like horse racing - another situation where an incredible collection of living creatures is being genetically pushed to the brink and then trained until their legs break and kill them. $$$ drives all.

The best dogs that I've ever had were total mutts and were free. If you're spending $4000 on an English bulldog that practically needs life support just to breathe... re-evaluate.

You can say similar things about cattle, poultry, pork, etc. We're genetically stretching their capabilities to the max, but at least we're doing so for a source of food. With dogs, we're deforming them beyond recognition purely for our own enjoyment.

dog eugenics. crazy how much healthier they originally looked. especially the bull terrier (the original would be my ideal dog) and weiner dog. i always felt bad for weiner dogs and would never want to own one because it is obvious their disproportionate bodies have to be a huge strain on their spines. also, not a fan of dogs with deviated septums. crazy to breed dogs like that, spend a ton of money for one, and then pay to get a surgery to fix their deviated septums. my wife has a friend with a couple english terriers. they are loud, constantly seem uncomfortable, and suffer from a lot of health problems.

also, it seems obvious that mutts would be healthier because of genetic diversity.

Yeah, that's what my current dog is. A good ole fashioned mutt. Part lab and part beagle, I think. Got her from a shelter/rescue place.
