Hittin' the links: Golf talk

Your posts made me think about my own course and its hazards.  So I counted:

  • white tees: 6230 yards, par 70
  • 8 holes have water in play
  • 17 holes have one or more bunkers  around the greens
  • 4 holes have fairway bunkers
  • It's very hilly.  13 holes have hills in play
  • The greens are very contoured.  There's only one relatively flat green, and no dome shaped greens.
This is basically the exact opposite of the course I grew up playing. It was 9 hole small town course with tiny greens, not much contouring and only 3 bunkers and 1 water hazard on the entire course. Come to think of it that is most likely why my sand game sucks so bad.

But I would much rather play a course like Benson or Johnny Goodman in Omaha as opposed to a Stone Creek or Tiburon.

Tale of two days:  Saturday I stopped off at the course near my house to hit a few iron shots at the driving range.  I was hitting my irons as well as I've ever hit them.  Just puring them--every shot.  Straight and on target.  Then Sunday I thought I'd hit a few more.  I couldn't hit an iron to save my life.  Terrible case of the shanks, even with my long irons.  (I never shank my long irons. Before anyway.)  Golf is a very frustrating sport.  /shakes head

I dropped by the range over lunch to revisit my irons.  I'm able to hit them decently again--without any shanks.  I think the deal on Sunday that threw me off was that I was sore from playing softball on Saturday afternoon.   Funny how something like that can totally throw your golf game off.

Made the mistake last weekend of going to Pacific Springs in Omaha. Nephew wanted to go golfing so since the sister isn't much of a golfer I figured I would go. Only good thing about the day was the fact it was nice. Took 3 hours to play 9 holes and now I remember why I never go to that course.

With the weather being nicer hoping to get out and play more here soon. Anyone been out around the Omaha area? Which courses are in good shape?

The conditions were insane. And the field was stout: former D1 and D2 standouts, former Kansas Mid-Am Team Champions, former Mid-Am Players of the Year, former Kansas Amateur champion, recent USGA Am and Mid-Am Qualifiers, etc.

I'm humbled to call myself a KGA Champion for the first time and now be invited to the Champions Dinner!

Nice. Your partner can flat out play. From the same hometown as I am. Pretty sweet that you guys won it and can call yourself champs.

Pretty decent accomplishment for me: played nine holes under par by myself yesterday.  At my local course from the whites (shorter men's tees).  A bit easier since I can kind of overpower the course from there - nearly reach the two par fives in two and one drivable par 4 that I rolled in an eagle "putt" from a few feet off the green.  But I did birdie #9 which is the hardest hole on the course to shoot one under.

Not bad for a hacker like me.

I knew I knew him.  I knew his roommate awhile back.

Finally got a chance to play a couple rounds the last month of so here. Played Aberdeen Farms in St. Louis during a weekend get away and played Table Creek in Nebraska City. BOth rounds resulted in 76 in the most frustrating ways possible. Lost 2 balls during each round and also finished 1 round with a double bogey and finished the other round bogey/bogey. Apparently not touching the sticks very often is a good thing for me. Guess my next goal is to shoot even for a round.

Good news, golfers! You need to play more. And that's doctor's orders.

A new study conducted by 25 European doctors and international experts has determined as much, citing the cardiovascular health benefits of playing the game (Of course, it helps to walk) like lower cholesterol and blood pressure. But as obvious as that sounds, there's a lot more the sport offers for your social well-being.

“Social interaction is the risk factor which has been undervalued,” Roger Hawkes, the former chief medical officer of the European Tour and one of the authors of the study, told CNN. “Mental health is a big thing in this day and age, and moderate physical activity is associated with a reduction in anxiety and a reduction in depression.”

Earlier in October I got up to Takanka.  GREAT track.  The scenery is fantastic.  The course is extremely hard from the tips and gets easier as you move up.  We started on the blue tee boxes and finished on the green ones.  Long, hard par 3's,  a reachable par 5.  I think #2 and #16 share fairways and greens.  Just a great course.  We stayed at the casino, but I doubt I'll do that again.  Slots are not my style, but I'll be back to play the course again

My youngest son is currently in South Carolina playing in the National Fellowship of Christian Athletes Golf Tournament representing Nebraska. They won the regional in Lincoln 2 months ago and won the state tournament in Valentine about a month ago. He and 3 team mates left Thursday morning and played a practice round Friday. The tournament is today and tomorrow.

Very cool.  Best of luck to him and his teammates.
