Team HuskerBoard
To Admin and mods,

I have received a couple of emails from Mike regarding his rejoining the mod team. He did not go into any details about what transpired between him and Eric. I didn't ask for those details either. He feels that he has made a very bad choice/decision regarding his resignation and requested that I ask everyone what the mood of the board is concerning him and being a mod again. I agreed to broach the subject to all of you for discussion.

To begin with, it all depends on how those of you involved feel such as ETR, Blackshirt and whoever else had any involvement in the incident. If it is past history or if too much has happened that there can be no trust regarding him.

My take on this is since I don't know all the facts I'm going by what I know and would not hesitate to have him as a mod again. I know Mike made a lot of decisions regarding members posts that seemed like good ones at the time. I think he and I were made men at about the same time :) He appeared to be very proactive stopping threads/posts from escalating into a war. I also don't remember every having an issue with any action he took on the board. When we were first made mods there were a whole slew of asshats popping off at all times keeping everyone very busy policing the board. And even though these contacts weren't face to face it could be stressful trying to keep order without being too heavy handed. Wow 5 years, what's the lifespan of a mod??? :dunno

I also know that we need to be membership oriented to help the board thrive. It would be up to Admin as to whether they think he could be an asset to the board again or would be a liability risk we couldn't afford. I know a requirement would be he follow the accepted practices with regards to being polite and helpful to the members rather than be completely inflexible and causing too much friction.

Appreciate the time and input that everyone wants to give.

Rick

I pretty much agree with your sentiments, Rick. I have primarily known Mike as a mod, until recently. I always looked up to him when our roles were reversed. These days, roles reversed, I still look up to Mike. The one thing I know for sure is that he cares about Huskerboard a great deal. My .02cents.

I would agree with everyone so far. I don't know the behind-the-scenes stuff of why he left in the first place, and if that door is shut because of that OK, but if not, he would obviously be an asset to the team.

As knapp already said I don't know all the happenings between ETR and HSKRNOKC. I know he seemed like a good mod and probably made a bad choice. I would be in favor of reinstating him and bringing him back on board. Good dude IMO

This is ultimately up to ETR and Blackshirt, IMO. I like him and I am glad he is back on the board, but I question the motivation behind this. Maybe it is a fault of my profession, but I am always suspicious of other than normal requests. If he comes back, will he do the same thing? Is this about the amount of control that a moderator can exert? Being a mod is a privilige and not a right. We have many users that, in my opinion, are held in higher regard and offer contributions to our board without having a moderator title or status. Many of us newly anointed mods have been kicking around here for years in this fashion before getting the call up to the pros.

With this all said, I think Mike is a stand up guy from what I know of him. He cares about the message board and was always fair as a moderator. I think he probably made a mistake and is kicking himself now. My one question for him would be "is it necessary for him to be a moderator for his continued participation?" I would not be opposed to having him come back, but I don't think we should just rubber stamp it. My .02.

Glad for the feedback and agree with all. I agree that it ultimately lies with ETR, Blackshirts, AR and other admin that make the final judgment and I will agree with them wholeheartedly. The board is the most important thing; and we follow the direction that is most likely to keep members satisfied with the board and add new members because of that product.

Mike got me into this mod thing, and I'll always look up to him. It's clear this board is something very dear to him, and I was surprised that he was upset enough to leave. I always hoped he would want to return, and I'm glad that he's choosing to do so.

But what went down is of course, very between him and ETR (and maybe others, I don't know). Whether that's resolved or not, isn't really something for me to say. I like Mike a lot and it'd be great if we could bring him back - but as DJR said, that's not a snap process or anything; it'd take some effort on both sides to reestablish him.

I'd welcome it, but without some word from the admins it's hard to say too much else. Certainly, I could accept an alternate decision, if the reasons for doing so are articulated clearly.

A good discussion - I like everyone's honest input.

The main benefit I see is this - Mike is on the Board a lot, and was a good moderator. I have a feeling that the upcoming season is going to be rough - we're going to draw every troll imaginable, and the more eyes we can have on the Board to stop things from getting out of control, the better.

As noted by DJR313, however, this comes down to what ETR and Blackshirt think - we need to get their thoughts on this. And there has to be trust by them that Mike should be back.

Rick, would you please let Mike know that you've passed on his request and that it's being discussed? Don't let him know what the discussion has contained or anything else; he'll know how the process works.

Eric, Chad - your thoughts?

Sure thing, I'll just let him know I posted the request and will await for developments.

Edit: sent the message Would it be better if I use the mail on the board so it can be tracked or just my 1911springfield address???

Either should be fine. I don't think that we need to track it, for what it's worth. Thanks, Rick.

This is just as difficult for me as anyone. I just don't have an answer right now.

Thanks this helps Eliot. :)

Here's where I'm coming from. Why would we want to ruin a great thing right now? I'm having similiar thoughts to what Herb Brooks was thinking during the 1980 hockey tryouts. He left off some of the best players for people "that fit the system." That's what I feel we have here, right now with the leadership team. We are going away from "dropping the hammer" immidiately on members. We must have a few patience and treat people with respect. We as a team are starting to understand that, I don't feel we are anywhere we need to be, but the more we focus on it the better results we will see. I don't feel Mike has the right temperment. I used to cut people loose just as Mike and any other mod was doing. I'm not saying we don't still do that because sometimes it's necessary, I'm totally behind you, but other times I want to see tact, transparent, polite, and cordial replies when a member falls out of line. Mike made it very clear he does not agree with that type of moderating and feels things were better doing it the old school way. We are simply going in a different direction. He has done some great work here and I don't want to forget that so when we are able to send out some Husker gear to you guys I would be happy to include him in the purchases.

I know some of you are upset and feel I don't have a leg to stand on because I haven't been around much at all and you'r 100% accurate. I haven't, but plan to after the first week in August when the season starts up and I'm officially done with my schooling. Please believe me, this board is like my child, I have over 11,000 posts, I, like all of you, have put tons of hours in. I can't wait to get back to it. You guys have done some amazing things and I appreciate the heck out of it.

Please feel free to reply, PM me, email me directly > ewicher@hotmail.com or I guess now facebook. If you have concerns or just feel insulted by what I have said, please let me know, don't let it build up. I'm willing to consider all feedback and want to do my best to keep this as democratic as I can.

I just needed your feedback. If you feel he doesn't meet the criteria you want for a mod, so be it. I'm here because I want to be and have no problem abiding by the rulz as set forth by the admin. I'm glad you stated where you are coming from and the groundrulz for what you want from us as mods. If you want to contact Mike and let him know the decision that's fine or I will be glad to let him know of the decision whenever you would want. I've never thought too much about how much any of the admin were on the board; usually Frank was/is around if there is a boom to be dropped and all the new mods are already better than me with their skill sets regarding computers. I'm just along for the ride and enjoying the view. :) and helping out when I can. I'm just an RN, and like to stick people with needles :laughpound
