I noticed the Adidas strips have a break up on the back. Are these new?

And how big was the fish he caught?![]()
I’ve followed the Cornhuskers for 40 yrs. Starting in early 80s. So I know all the lore and the heart break, then finally breaking through and being THE team in the 90s.
so if we back it up a bit, despite the fandom and the fanatics and the legend, knowing how Devaney struck gold….all that… but it’s like
What made Devaney a great coach? How did he get the greatness and turn a program around and win how he did, under him.
was he x and o, great recruiter, better scheme, etc…
he just did something that doesn’t possible nowadays. What was his gold?
:laughpound Punt on third down “to be safe”. Why wait, might as well on first. Defense!Devaney took over for Bill Jennings, whose offense was derisively called "three yards and a cloud of dust." Jennings was also known to punt on third down, just to be safe.
Bob Devaney simply modernized Nebraska football. In the first play of Devaney's first game he called for Dennis Clairidge to throw a pass. It was incomplete, but Memorial Stadium gave him a standing ovation anyway. Devaney was a great motivator, and as someone else mentioned, a smart delegator, surrounding himself with good assistants and trusting them. When Devaney suffered two consecutive 6-4 seasons, and the fans grumbled darkly just as they do today, Bob was smart enough to hand the offense over to young Tom Osborne to further innovate.
It was a winning culture, and although Bob could be a bastard if you screwed up, he was also damned funny and his players loved him.
I've been on teams that have punted on 3rd down. Very windy. Offense not going well. Wind at your back right before the end of a quarter. Punt while the wind is helping you. gain field position and let the other team play with wind in their face. Also line up to kick a field goal on 3rd. if there's a bad snap or what not you get a second chance.:laughpound Punt on third down “to be safe”. Why wait, might as well on first. Defense!
