Riley is not a great example to make your otherwise great point. 2015 and 2016 were very similar in terms of production, just not wins. 

 
We will never win a big ten west championship let alone a big ten championship with the defense coordinator we have now.  Was not good at UCF and won't be here either.  Sorry just being honest, I hope to come back to this thread/blog and eat crow, but I don't think I will have too.

I think you're just being wrong, and I'm pretty sure you'll be eating crow within the next 2 seasons about not winning the west.

Eh, not so sure.  The record was better.  But I'm not sure we were really that much of a better team.

In 2015, Sagarin had us as the #42 team with a rating of 76.55

In 2016, Sagarin had us as the #45 team with a rating of 74.18

In 2015, our Football Outsiders S&P+ rating was 74.7

In 2016, our football Outsiders S&P+ rating was 65.4

So I think you can make a decent argument that we didn't really improve at all and may have actually been a bit worse.

2016 rivals 2003 as the biggest "smoke and mirrors" seasons in school history.

Not sure how that is realistic, especially losing Divine & Stanley on O and seeing the D struggle like they did most of the year. They need upgrades at more positions than you can count. Not to mention, as improved as they were, they still ended up 4-8. I'd have a hard time even thinking about ranking them top 25 preseason.
