Heres some behind the scenes info about whats been going on with the server issues. Pls keep this here.
My server admin has been working his a$$ off over the past 2-3 days virtually nonstop to rectify and attempt to isolate the problem.
Hes nearly certain its the result of DOS-type attacks from users flooding the board.
He 1st banned all the IPs and installed a firewall, but whenver the site would go down, so would the firewall and the attacks would resume. Several of the users are in Houston - or at least appear to be.
I told him about the IP blanket ban problem we had, so he unbanned all of them, and is working on a better long-term fix.
He's creating a program to only allow a certain number of hits per hr. if a user exceeds them, they are clipped. it will be very high, only a level a bot would create, so it shouldnt affect anyone, even the BRIs of the world.
He also created several programs to auto-ping the site every min, and if either Apache, mysql or the server isn't responding, it automatically restarts them. this should reduce the chance that the board will ever be offline for more than a few mins.
Completely re-installed the server which I guess was a cluster-eff due to some busch-league attempts at "optimizatoin" by my hosting company, 800hosting. also did a shittom of d-base repairs on corrupt tables & files.
As youve noticed he also installed a chatrroom to use on gamedays to ease the load. Ive asked him to integrate this into the main page of the board, which he will work on.
He also temp removed searching abilities and the members online listing, to reduce the load on the server until everything gets ironed.
And numerous other things. needless to say he's been incredibly gracious with his time and accessible, especially considering I dont keep him on "retainer" b/c I cant afford to. I expect to get billed for the time he's spent, which he has to do b/c time is money for a systems admin, but his rates are fair and has literally saved our asses over the past few days, so it will be well worth it. if he wouldnt have been available, the board probalby woulda been down all day today, which wouldve been a disaster.
I'll try to keep you guys informed as more develops. Oh and if you get a sec, I think it would be a nice gesture to drop him a note just letting him know we realize how hard he's worked and it's appreciated.

Thanks to you guys as well for keeping this ship running tight. Its becoming obvious which free board is the clear cut favorite, and with success comes haters - but we'll pull through it and be better than ever. We're starting to dominate fellas, and it feels pretty good. but lets get even better.
:cheers
