...according to J. Bruce Harreld, the University of Iowa's new President. LINK

If an adjunct had said something like that to a class of students I bet that person would have been booted. It's cool though. This guy is the president.

Well then, Mr. Iowa President, don't hire instructors who aren't ready to teach their classes. Seems like that problem falls back on you and the BoR.

Instructors shouldn't be teaching University classes in the first place, but Universities aren't willing to pay to have professors do it.

Here's a good read about that president:

I didn't read the whole thing but I've read before that he listed a company on his CV that doesn't exist. Also, he doesn't have a Ph.D and had never held an administrative position at a University. The faculty were absolutely against his hiring but they were completely ignored by the board of regents.

How is it ignorant? Which part am I ignorant about? Fill me in instead of being vague.

When I was attending SCC Lincoln, I go to an Algebra class of roughly 30 some people. Fairly large group and most of us are stupid like me and wanna be back at their apartment drinking whiskey.

We all take our seats when this asian dude with spikey hair walks in and instead of taking his seat, goes over and starts doodling on the white boards, guy looks 17 maybe 18 so we are all like "man the instructor is gonna be pissed". After a few minutes he tells us he IS the instructor when he senses us all thinking WTF.

Well needless to say it didn't go well. He would try to teach 4 different things at once because there were 4 white boards in the room. He would fly through a lesson and then say "You understand?" before jumping into the next weird equation. Guy was nowhere near ready to teach.

95% of all teachers suck the first year or two.

I swore I had the dumbest kids. I even did TWO sample problems. Had no concept of student centered learning.
