Iowa Rivalry

I would like to see us play Notre Dame every year again like in the 20s. That would generate such a buzz around the nation, that it could become one of the biggest non-conference rivals. I don't think ND would do it though since they have the game with USC every year. But I can dream...

USC, michigan, michigan St, Penn St,

they have a pretty tough schedule. i think you will have to resort to dreams. it would be nearly impossible to get them to play us every year.

I know that Illinois is not that great of a team but that would be a close team as far as miles apart and there is a good recruiting base. I have good friends that live in the St. Louis area and they have alot of Illinois fans plus on the Missouri side of the river.

Just a thought

Yeah, in the Big XII you get the occasional good team, but in the Big "11" you're guarnteed a GREAT team every season. It would definately be a more exciting season to say the least.
And how many National Championships does the big 11 have in the last 20 years? The Big 12 has 3 in only 10 years of existance. Go back 20 years further, to the big 8 and Nebraska has 2 more, plus CU one. I would argue that on most occasions, the Big 12 is every bit as tough as the big 11. Right now, the Big 12 is top heavy, it will level out soon!!
It might not have as many titles, but it has so many teams with history. Sure the Big XII has OU, UT, and us, but the Big 10 has Mich, Ohio State, Penn State, and even Wisconsin in the mix, plus the Iowa game. If you could make it through that schedule, you would be guarenteed a shot at the title.

You're right eventually the Big XII will level out, but wouldn't it be great to play an Ohio State in Lincoln every now or then, or maybe every year. That would be really exciting.
Dude, once you get past Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State, the other teams are just like the rest of the big 12. We've got OU, Texas, and Nebraska, they have Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State. I'll take ours over there's any day!! BTW, Wisconsin used to suck, until Alvarez arrived. The Big 12 stands second to none. The Big 12 is pretty damn tough, and I'll take it over the Big 10/11 anyday!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying at all that the Big XII is inferior. I just think the matchups that a Big 10 conference could have would be really exciting. I'd love seeing the Big Red in the Big House, and the Horseshoe. Those games would be crazy! I don't hate the Big XII, I'm just thinking about fun matchups.

if it wasnt for the Little Eleven's awesome TV contract, we wouldnt even be thinking about them. I cant turn on the TV on saturday without watching a stupid little eleven game.

That is the point Pig, we would be on TV more with better games. Yea we beat Michigan once, but beating them every year would be a reall accomplishment. Beating Ohio State and Penn State. Throw in Wisconsin and I guess the Iowa game. You have direct comparison with Notre Dame as they play Michigan and Michigan State nearly every year. Think about the exposure for the program. We currently play one team a year in our conference that has that kind of reputation. Texas or Oklahoma. No one else compares to the power (TV ratings) of the four mentioned above.

Texas is changing the rules to fit them. Before long the CCG will be played in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. That is what they want and it will happen.

I know there is no way it would happen but I think it would be the best thing for Nebraska. If we go in the Big 11 and win we will become the media darlings. Wouldn't that be a change.

But as far as having a rival. I think it has to develop on the field. We have been so superior to all around our borders it is hard to come up with one. I just do not think Iowa fits the bill. I do not think of Iowa as a traditional football power, never have and I doubt I ever will.

:yeah Great quote. Couldn't have said it better myself. :cheers

yes i agree with a lot what you said but unfortunately the Little Eleven would never accept us. They dont see NU as a major research university. I just dont think it is ever going to happen. Not only would we have to travel a lot more to get to games, but the other fan bases will have to travel to us. It would hurt our Baseball program as well as other sports. it would work out for TV ratings, etc, but i dont see it happening.

actually, we beat michigan twice.

Michigan and Nebraska have a nice history together, despite only playing 6 times. There once was a program that was mired in obscurity. Then in 1962, a coach called Bob Devaney defeated Michigan in Ann Arbor in a regular season game. That year NU went 9-2 with a bowl victory over Miami. Then 35 years of dominance followed.

Fast Forward to 2005. Huskers are on the cusp of mediocrity. As fate would have it, we are playing Michigan, again. We defeated Michigan, and now there is an enthusiasm that has been absent in over 5 years. Will our team travel the same path as Devaney's Huskers from Generations passed? That remains to be seen, but judging from history, things are going to get real good.

Yeah, it would hurt some things, but ratings would be good, which would mean more money. But it will never happen.

Anyways, I also think we are on our way back up. The Thanksgiving Massacre in 01 was the start of our downfall. Last year, a 30-3 ballgame. I think as much as we won't acknowledge CU as a rival, something about that game either shows that we are good or not.

It took the CU games when McCartney got there to turn our program into the dominant tem, because we weren't going to let them be on top. So coincidence...hmmm...
