Iowa - What Did We Learn?

We are beholden to the Raiola family right now.  The offensive line play is not good.  Don't give me these stats about qb pressures and other things that say our line play is good enough, eyes tell me different.  When our line has to block, they can't.  When we know the other team is bringing the heat, we can't protect our QB.  Can't!  Last time I said this sometime brought out these pro focus numbers and really, they don't tell you everything.  The best thing for this program is losing the whole family.  If our offensive line doesn't improve, no matter who is QB.  Show me a game where Dylan brought this team back from adversity?  Show me game where our line protected Dylan when we had a chance too win a game or make a comeback?  Each time this season, our games  ended with either an interception or sack ending the game.

I learned that some fans will reflexively blame the coaches no matter what. Muffed punt, bad snap, horrible failed tackle, QB fumble, ball right through a receiver’s hands…. All we needed was for some players to make a play and too many didn’t at critical times. It’s that simple. But go ahead and blame the coaches.

Another thing learned.  Stop the stupid off season stuff. Sure cover the team but no one has won or earned jack in the last 15 years.  So no one deserves accolades and special attention.  We have been a problem sunshine pumping before they have done anything.  The players are not hungry as the fans are everywhere.  It’s not earned.  I want dawgs on this team.  Do we even have any?  Where’s my Ameer, Rex, Suh…guys known by one name and you know what it brings. Maybe Ty but it took him 5 years to get there.  I want it day 1.
Agreed, the single digit bs needs to be kicked to the curb.  Zero point in recognizing team leaders when all we’ve seen is a losing performance.

to the other posters wanting to tear s#!t down, let’s at least wait to see what happens with Dana.  To expect him to turn s#!t water into wine, by himself, with none of his own staff and players within a month mid season is just unrealistic. If we retain him, the majority of this offensive staff and supporting analysts will look very different.  He will also have an opportunity to get skill guys that better fits his system.  We saw again tonight raiola was hesitant to just hit the safety valve hb flat pass like he did against wiscy, and it cost us. A full off-season for Dana to work with him should pay dividends and help undo the complete disservice shatterfield inflicted on us this whole season.

our special teams cannot play any worse than they did tonight.  We need to pay for a punter and, I never thought I’d say this, but a f’n long snapper too.  There are teams that go a full season without snapping on kicking opps being an issue, we can barely go 2 games without it f#&%ing us over.  A change in staff should be a foregone conclusion.

today f#&%ing sucked, one of the most “winnable” games we choked away for sure.  But let’s also not forget we put too much on the shoulders of a true freshman qb for most of the year and it did this team and the fans base a complete disservice.  Rhule has seen firsthand how he f#&%ed up with satt and the quick dividends that Dana delivered, he now needs to be equally as ruthless to address special teams.

it’s also worth mentioning that whoever is leading our transfer portal decision and recruitment deserves to be reevaluated.  Simms completely sank year 1.  Our receivers were a complete dud in year 2. Rhule simply cannot afford to f’n whiff a 3rd year getting guys who can contribute immediately

I learned that it is possible to reach the end of what I'm willing to deal with as a Husker fan. This team is dead to me. I'm over their mentally weak BS.

I just still can’t explain it. Two coaches in a row its the same horrifying problems. What’s to be done? What happens if the next coach is like this? (Rhule’s out after year 5, we all know it)

Seriously, if you are a recruit considering Nebraska and you saw this team lose to a pathetic Iowa team with no QB, 5 first downs, and lead running back having 38 yards, would you want to commit to this team? I bet that kid from UTAH is thinking to himself “ man, I dodged a bullet”. Rhule does not get how s#!tty performance like today hurts the supposed rebuilding. Iowa had no business winning today. We did everything in our power to lose this game.
You are right, we had no business losing this game.  I do think about how it impacts recruiting.  The thing is if you play with fire, passion, and like a dawg who wills his way to win and never lose, this fanbase will love you, win or lose, in this respect there is no place like Nebraska.  Be smart, play hard, do your job, protect the football. Our roster does not have these types of players.  Unfortunately I don’t see it from Raiola, no OL, none of the WRs.  The defense has no eraser player that can get the entire defensive mojo going.  We have no playmakers, no all conference type players….how can this be for as many fans we bring and how many sellouts we support?  So damn I see a lot of opportunities for recruits  to come in here and just dominate.  Because today we have a lot of lackluster play, defensive guys trying to be tough even though they just gave up a first down.  And now I just saw the clip where our guys would not shake the Iowa players hands before the game? What the F is that?  You guys aren’t badass, your’re a laughing stock. So flip this s#!t roster and get guys in here that are hungry to win and achieve.

I mean, is it not the coaches who are supposed to address these inexcusable gaps that happen nearly every week?  Whose fault is it we’ve completely whiffed in the portal for 2 offseasons now? Whose decision is it to continually play upper classmen that crumble time and time again?  Neyor sure showed out again tonight *sarcasm*, glad our receiver coach keeps putting him towards top of depth chart when there are not only more explosive guys but younger ones who extremely benefit from getting real reps.

why are we still incapable of returning punts? Who’s coaching these guys up on simple fundamentals? I’m pretty sure we had a net positive punting yardage after the first game of like 30 yards and the the rest of the 11 games combined was like 50.  Where’s the accountability?

i fully agree, players need to make plays, but our offensive and special teams operation have been inconsistent and mediocre for 2 seasons now- it starts with the guys up top.  We saw some pretty noticeable changes with intentional run designs, quicker hitting routes and simpler calls in 3 weeks with Dana.  It’s these coaches who are picking who’s playing and who’s brought in the program.

I think that an Indiana overhaul is what is needed right now.  Find those players who can play.  The portal will be full of player who want to win and do whatever it takes to win. Find those guys, pay those guys, and go and win games like this one tonight.  If you look at the games we lost this season- Illinois- they were mentally tougher.  Indiana- was more physical and faster.  Ohio St- was more talented even though they were overlooking us. UCLA- wanted it more.  USC- Poor coaching against a poor coaching staff.  Iowa-toughness game that we gave away.  The team who beat us were just plain better coached and played tougher in the 4th quarter.

ST is making me livid because we all knew what was going to happen there at some point and it cost us this win. We lost this game because we didn’t improve a clown show of ST that existed the whole season.  Inexcusable and that is on Rhule.  We have no punt return game so that is a freebie for the opponent knowing Nebraska just doesn’t return punts, automatic flip of the field, every time.

We have not done well in the transfer portal and I would argue recruiting as well.  It is not winning to finish like 23 in recruiting behind several of your own conference opponents.

So to me it’s a combination of players, no all conference players…plus coaching, trying to fix the offense with 3 games left, no attention to special teams and so we just continue to be behind other teams…and so you end up with an average .500 football team.  We have to do better.  Rhule’s slow build is not cutting it.  Upgrade the players, upgrade the coaches or plan to be stuck in mediocrity.

I will also say that right now, its going to be hard to sell this program over other programs.  The playoffs will dictate a lot of movement in the portal.  I don't think we are close to getting there yet.  SEC schools will have first dibs on the better players.  LSU is only a few player away from competing.  OU is only a couple of players away from being a contender.  Penn St will be hot after better offensive weapons this offseason.  So we have to be willing bring in starters and play them.

Teams take the personality of their coaches. Rhule is not tough. He looks lost and confused and his team looks the part. We are not mentally tough and we simply do not expect to win close games so we do everything we can to lose them. Raiola looks confused, has no pocket awareness, and is very slow. He misses open receivers and his receivers do not bail him out because I do not think they respect him as a leader. In fact, I don’t think the team respects Rhule as a leader and that is why they don’t care if they piss another close game away. At this point, losing close games is part of their identity and DNA and they have become numb to losing. We need player leaders. We don’t have any and coaches don’t seem to be able to develop leaders.

I put it 60% s#!t coaches and 40% s#!t players.

mcguire, satt and foley should be canned tomorrow. Sign Dana to a 2 year, let him pick guys for bowl game to start prepping for next season now.

play all young guys in the bowl and let’s see what we have to work with.  I thank the upperclassmen for their dedication and what they’ve given to the progrum, some for 6 years, but I’ve seen enough and wish them luck.

Iowa are boring and not imaginative at all but they never beat themselves. They had one penalty all game and they did not turn the ball over. Their ST flipped the field all night and they had good returns. On the other hand, our ST did what it has done all year long. Manage to find ways to lose us the game. The fact the Ed Foley was not fired six games ago speaks volumes about what Rhule thinks about ST and their importance. We have yet to have a good game where all three phases of the game played well. That is coaching.
