K-State schedules future series with newcomer UTSA

Texas San-Antonio will be college football's newest team in 2011 when it begins play as an FCS team. In 2014, it plans to begin FBS play at college football's highest level.

It will also play Kansas State, the school announced on Wednesday. The Roadrunners, led by former Miami coach Larry Coker, signed up to play Kansas State for three seasons, beginning in the 2014 season. In 2015, they'll play at the Alamodome in San Antonio before returning to Manhattan in 2018.

The Roadrunners have also scheduled three games with Baylor, beginning in 2017.

The opponent sounds like a perfect one for the Wildcats, whose "new" coach, Bill Snyder, has no plans to toughen up his notoriously easy nonconference schedules. Former coach Ron Prince helped get Auburn and Virginia Tech on Kansas State's schedule in 2014, but if Snyder's comments to me earlier this spring are acted upon, those games likely won't ever happen.

The same goes for games against Oregon and Miami scheduled for games against the Wildcats in 2011.

"That doesn’t assist our program," Snyder said of scheduling difficult nonconference games. "The Big 12 -- and you’ve heard me say this before -- the Big 12 is tough enough in its own right, as we all know. You go through the season and halfway through you’ve got seven or so of the Big 12 teams are in the top 15 in the country. So you’ve got a very strength-based conference. We already play eight games in the conference. We don’t need to play the same kind of games throughout the entirety of the season."

Last season, Kansas State was forced to play two FCS teams, and since only one could count toward bowl eligibility, the Wildcats were left at home during bowl season with a 6-6 record. Snyder has no plans to do that again, but UTSA, a team that will surely be a cupcake of the soft, cream-filled variety in 2014, saw a team in Kansas State that would surely schedule it.

They were right.

I can't understand how anyone can respect a coach that is so patently opposed to playing a real NC schedule. All Snyder is doing is affirming the fact that KSU is, and always will be a second rate FB team. I can't imagine another coach in the country getting away with comments like this without catching a ton of flack from that teams fans. The saddest part about Mildcats fans though, is that they probably condone the old coots actions. Hell as long as he's winning games, who cares if he's buying em, right?

"We already play eight games in the conference. We don’t need to play the same kind of games throughout the entirety of the season."
But it's OK that the rest of the conference does? What a douche!
