Warren does give his opinion. He said as much. But he doesn't make the call. There's zero chance an institution like Northwestern or Rutgers is going to do whatever Warren tells them to do when they're the ones who will be liable for the lawsuits that come from playing. 

 
Every single Big 10 president had input.   The narrative of 'it's all 'Kevin Warren's fault' as far as cancelling is and always has been ridiculous.  It was a collective decision.  Why anyone would think it wasn't is beyond me.

I feel very confident if Jim Delaney we’re still in charge we would be slated to play right now. 
 

kevin “ rock the vote” warren is too busy with stuff that is out of his lane than figuring out all the contingencies and advocating for players getting a chance to play this year. 
 

he still has yet to meet with players and parents to help him understand their needs. He still hadn’t laid out in detail how  spring will work- (because they have no intentions of playing this spring) he’s too busy doing other stuff.

The Big Ten (Big 14) will be sued for all this - either way.  Sue anybody with bucks.  Thats the rule lawyers follow.  In this case, the Big Ten is making decisions.

It's far easier to lampoon one person than 14, especially when you have no idea who those people are. Mostly it's just having a convenient target.

 
I don't think it was Warren's decision though I do think he advocated against a season. There have been reports he has always preferred a spring season.

However, when you are the leader of an organization you are the one who has to step up and regardless of the decision support and defend it as if it was yours alone. He's being attacked because he has failed miserably in that aspect. He needed to direct his organization to provide reasons, stats, facts as to why this was the decision that was made and he needed to step to the plate and take ownership of a multi billion dollar decision. Instead he provided an extremely poor interview on his own network (friendly interview) and lambasted Nebraska for asking if there was still a chance to play and then went into apparent hiding as his conference has egg thrown on its face again and again.

I mean heck the presidents and AD's and coaches are apparently not on the same page as they've all given various accounts and info on what they knew/decided. He failed as a leader of his organization and he's facing the consequences and handling them poorly.

THIS is something I can agree on, and stated as much in the OP.  He was awful in that interview, and that should have been easy stuff. 

The Big Ten has always prided itself on its unity of purpose. That is badly lacking in this situation, and it's nearly inexcusable considering they had so long to prepare for the ultimate decision.  

 
The only thing that makes sense is that no formal vote was recorded. But I don’t know if that is publicly  reviewable. 
 

This is a smart conference. Ivy League lite if you ask them. How many smart people would sign away their rights without understanding the implications? 
 

 
5 months to prepare protocols and processes. A   Business like this must have a myriad of if/then flowchart scenarios prepared for once the pandemic was announced. 
 

In all honesty does anyone  think Jim Delaney would have managed this in a significantly better way? 
 

does warrens management of this give you any confidence in his ability to negotiate a good tv contract or is he counting on the coaches to do that for him too?

Don’t expect warren to issue a statement that talks about his son playing. He’s in a no win situation there if he doesn’t bar his son from playing.  But If he did it might look something like this: 

After much thought and prayerful consideration we’re decided as a family to allow our soN to make his own decision on playing this season at Mississippi state university. We realize these are difficult and trying times, but felt our adult son was in a position to make his own decisions and plan on supporting that decision whatever it may be.

I disagree. Don’t we have a thread on helicopter parents? In fact, I think it means that he is paid by the BIG and that is who he is serving.

If you want specific examples of him dropping the ball, here's a couple that immediately come to mind:

  • Schedule release/debacle... Surely the commissioner of the Big10 had a say or input in the league having a way too over hyped schedule release just days before suddenly cancelling the season
  • Leaders lead- What Mr. Warren showcased was a shotgun reaction seemingly to the MAC bowing out.  If the Big10 is stepping out for health/liability reasons he should have had ample scientific and medical resources behind him supporting this decision... instead, rumor mill started THE SECOND the MAC cancelled their season.... 
  • Lack of institutional control and a solidified decision.... Jim Delany would not have had a situation where schools are blindsided to the point where they are openly questioning the decision and petitioning to bring back... As commission YOU HAVE to ensure that all are onboard, and if not, control the message and press accordingly.
  • Questioning the accuracy of data you are leveraging.... University of Michigan, one of the flagship schools of the conference, is calling into question the study/data set used to make this decision? lol, what a look

If the buck doesn't stop with the commission of the league over a questionable and flawed decision process, who should own it?
