I love local govt. and lower taxes. I can see how that makes me conservative.
But I absolutely HATE the ignorance that the GOP has given me as options to vote for.
I live in NE. I've registered as both R and D.
Both seem to be a race to the "right" or "left".
I voted "conservative, but don't agree"
PS: "Culture Wars" dont count. They are stupid as far as govt discussions are involved.
If anything, this post might show "conservatives" that "dems" are on there side, just quit saying stupid s#!t. And vice versa.

I put conservative but don’t agree with current GOP. I could’ve put Independent as well because that is how I am currently registered and have been voting. In fact in the last couple elections I’ve been forced to vote a pretty much straight Dem ticket (yuck).
I was a conservative republican for a long time….until Trump, MTG and all these other crazy mofos came along and took control of the party. Now I see the GOP as a bigger threat to America than any country or terrorist organization could ever hope to be.

I selected Independent. I used to be a Republican, and have never been a registered Democrat, but when the Republicans started going bat S insane I stopped even considering Republican candidates. Even the ones here in local government are toeing the party line. That's a big nope from me.

@funhuskerFunny, yesterday I was thinking about doing the same kind of post. I had similar hunches. Thanks for following through.
I put conservative but not in agreement wt today's GOP. I no longer tie true conservative principles and the GOP together. That separation happened some time ago. There is a false conservativism that we now see in the GOP which is more of a nationalistic fascism. True conservatism is looking for a new party to form. If the OP had a choice of moderate - I would have chosen it. In the past 8 years I have moved from hard nose Rush, Glenn Beck 'conservatism' to old school moderate - which was Ronald Reagan conservatism back in the day.
I agree with you Knapp. I could have just as easily said independent. I'm not beholding to a party. In OKLA you have to be registered to a party to participate in the primaries - so I kept my GOP affiliation just to have some small influence on the voting. But I've voted Dem or independent the last 2 election cycles. Even more so in 2024 if the GOP doesn't change their stance on gun control - the new 'life' issue.
I'm of the opinion that today's GOP is yesterday's old southern Democratic party - ruled by fear, racism, demagoguery, etc. Personally, I relate more closely to some of the political idols of my youth - Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. There really is no one on the GOP side that 'lights my fire' any longer. I honestly think Romney would been an excellent president. But he blew it in the last debate. IF he had won in 2012, we would not have had Trump in 2016. Of course if the Dems had chosen ANYONE other than Hillary, trump wouldn't have been elected. :bang

Well it's true that fascism has historically taken hold where the fascists present themselves as the bulwark against the far more dangerous scourge of socialism. Of course they don't call themselves fascists, just nationalists and patriots. But things usually go downhill fast from there.

I thought 17 votes was a low turnout, but it seems there are only about 28 of "us" as measured by people posting in P&R the last couple weeks.
Some folks go on hiatus for awhile, maybe the football off-season has something to do with it, or certain hot button issues flaring up, but this is a fairly small group. High quality content for the most part. And not really representational of America at large. Or is it? I'm not sure what to think any more.
I think many if not most of us like to think we're independent -- we vote however or whenever we want -- and 42% of Americans now identify as Independent, but at the same time we seem to be moving farther away from policy and issues and more into ideological loyalty tests. If national elections were referendums on individual issues, America would be considered a lot more progressive than it is now.
Of course I like to think I can't be bought, and will vote for whomever I want. But I haven't ever voted for a declared conservative, so Liberal was more accurate for me than Independent.
My sweet spot is a pragmatist with a sense of humor, and they're hard to find.
