Guys,

I went to Atwoods a few days ago and saw a whole bunch of horseshoes for sale and got to thinking about a little project that I am going to do. I am going to make a replica horseshoe like the one the players touch during the tunnel walk. Thus far, I have a horseshoe and a piece of wood....what material should I use for the green part? Also, does anyone have a suggestion for how I should do the gold trim? Thanks guys.

 
I'm going to steal this idea from Maud and do this myself. I've found some pics of the 'shoe online, but only one of them is big enough to see details.

According to the large photo I linked to, the shoe is just mounted on that fake grassy astroturf stuff. You can find that anywhere, and you may be able to get it free from a local carpet seller. The frame is either wood or some metal, which you could probably get at any old craft/framing store.

I'm betting I could make this thing for $30, tops. Any suggestions on where to find a horseshoe?

 
I too am going to do this. The frame looks like it is made out of stainless steel. You can find these frames anywhere. Does anyone know the dimensions of that frame?

 
If you live in Lincoln, go down to State Fair Park since the horse races are going on. I bet at the barn they'd just give you one. Or go to the Fort on 56th, I think they actually sell them. Or maybe Orschelins?

 
I was going to say, "Why don't you just buy the replica one online?"

Then I realized that the replica one isn't really close to what the real one looks like.

The horses they race aren't the kinds of horses we'd need. That's a draft horse shoe - much larger.

I called the State Fair park just to check, and they said it'd be almost impossible to get down to the horses/owners without a pass, and you only get the pass if you're a breeder, a trainer or an owner. So that's probably a dead end.

I looked on Orscheln's website and they didn't seem to have any. I'll drive by there on the way home tonight so I can stop in and see if they have any. I know a guy who works at The Fort, maybe he knows something.

 
You are all amateurs in terms of agriculture if you can't track down a horseshoe supplier. For instance, e-mail the Horse Specialist at the Animal Science department on Campus and ask where you could get some shoes for Draft Horses. If a bunch of you want to make them, just get a larger number and split them between board members

You live in a state where attaining products such as this is a pretty easy task. Hell, just find a Fleet/Farm outside of town or go check Tractor Supply Company.

Regular (not draft) shoes run about 2 bucks at Fleet Farm. TSC runs up around 3 bucks a piece. I don't see any with the tailed ends however.

Ebay has some BIN shoes that have the same end but have the flat upper portion.

This looks to be the best I could find in 10 minutes.

Very few Nebraskans work in agriculture, so don't go giving us a bad time. ;)

Kathy Anderson is out of the office until 7/19/10 because of the state 4-H horse show.

EDIT - I'll swing by Tractor Supply Company on the way home and see if they have a shoe to match the Huskers Shoe. If they do, I'll post prices in this thread.

Maybe I jumped the gun, but almost everyone I know has some experience on a farm just from living in the state and having family in the state. I assume that can't apply to everyone though. I'm no farmer, but I've thrown a few hay bales.

I'll ask my father if I get around to it. He could probably track something down if I bugged him to enough but he's a busy man.

It's no problem. I drive right by TSC on the way home, so I'll just swing in. Their website says they sell shoes for less than $5. Surprisingly, Orscheln's doesn't. They sell just about everything, including chicks in season, but not horseshoes? Hard to believe.

The "saddle store" aint got horsheos??

Aint the green material on the frame a piece of the old astroturf when it was replaced, cuz ive seen some older videos and i think (not sure) the horshoe just hung on the wall. ???
