Member SilkBleedsHuskers having trouble logging on

One of our other members may have gotten rolled up in the IP bans we had to do a few weeks ago. This guy posts from the same IP as, among others, ShawnWatson. I don't think it's ShawnWatson, but maybe his work is one of the IPs we banned when SW got the boot?

The IP in question is (I think): 216.113.160.74

Subject: unable to use huskerboard website anymore

Hello,

For about the past 2 weeks, every time I visit huskerboard, it immediately gives me the error message

"Sorry, you don't have permission for that! You are not allowed to visit this community. This could be either the result of an ban, or it may be a bug we are currently experiencing with some mobile devices. If you are on a mobile device, please try ending all applications, shutting off your device, restarting after 60 seconds. This may resolve the issue. You may also contact admin(at)huskerboard.com and mods(at)huskerboard.com to clarify your account status."

However, I am on a desktop computer at my work. It does allow me to use the website when I am at home. I have always been able to use the website at work up until about 2 weeks ago when the above error message started.

Any idea what is going on with this?

Thanks

Colin

I show four members or former members using that IP:

ShawnWatson

SilkBleedsHuskers

hskrfan4life

Skers4Life!

So, yeah, I suspect it's the banned IP causing the problem. I suspect you're right - it's a business IP and he works with ShawnWatson, since Silk posts through the following IPs:

216.113.160.74

174.74.1.211

216.113.168.139

174.74.27.30

The issue, though, is how to handle this. If we unban the IP, it allows ShawnWatson to re-register under a different email account and username. Since he posted through 222 IPs, and the vast majority are Verizon IPs with just a few in the 216.113.*.* range, my guess is that ShawnWatson didn't use his mobile while at work.

We could tell him that it appears he's posting from work, and that his work has assigned him an IP that has been banned, and tell him to contact his IT department to get a new IP address (assuming that's not a router address).

I dunno - thoughts?

If ShawnWatson goes to a coffee shop, he can register under a different email & username -- he's probably one or two of the recent socks. So if he really wants to, these accounts would just keep popping up.

Not that there's no value in the IP bans, but maybe in a case like this it wouldn't hurt to remove a specific single IP ban on request? Those IPs would change periodically anyway too, right?

Thanks, guys. I'll let him know that we're "fixing" it on our end, without getting specific, and we'll see what happens.

ShawnWatson is Patrick Elsener, so if a new member crops up with ties to that name we can start watching them.
