Men in Uniform

A police officer was transporting a prisoner in a van. The inmate and the officer had been handcuffed together so that the inmate didn't try to escape. At some point the inmate had killed the officer and taken off in the van, trying to get away. However, as they were traveling the van ran out of gas. The inmate is now stuck with a dead officer handcuffed to him in the middle of nowhere.

The prisoner killed the guard who was handcuffed to him. The driver of the van tried to exit the van and was bitten by a rattlesnake(or coral snake). The prisoner is angry and frustrated because the driver had the only set of keys for the door and cuffs.

Was the prisoner fronting as a guard? Was he discovered and that is why he killed the guard?
