He hasn't coached a down at Nebraska but has coached thousands of downs elsewhere. I think it's fair to evaluate a guy based on his recruiting and winning ability over a 14 year time span. And before his location is brought up, I don't want to hear excuses. I wouldn't be excited, like everybody else, if we transplanted the staff from NC State or Boston College. Both have decent coaches and would do better with 'resources'. But would you be excited about hiring them?
He'll win games here, by virtue of our division. But can he get Nebraska over the hump? Can he bring in top 15 recruiting classes? I have my doubts.
I think if he was at a program that was equal in revenue and facilities/recruiting as Nebraska you'd have a point. Until then you're talking out of your arse, making excuses, and trying to make some kind of point that has no relevance...why? No idea...Because I have tons of data of coaches who haven't been good at some colleges and they get to a major football college and become great (Saban for one...there are plenty of others..take your pick).
Save your doubts and wait until you see what kind of team he can put together. Give the man a chance...hell people gave Pelini more of a chance than they want to give Riley and I find that atrocious.
That's why I pointed out the othe programs in my post. All of those staffs aren't equal footing to Nebraska, are hard to recruit too and have moderate success (like Riley). But which staffs around the country DOESN'T, ourside of the big boys, the resources arguement apply too?
For every Nick Saban there are 15 coaching hires that don't hack it. It's incredibly rare to find an Urban Meyer or Saban. You're far more likely to find a Pelini, Hoke or Muschamp.
Im bringing this up because Nebraska fans tend to wear rose glasses permanently. It's been 15 years since our last conference title. We should probably take a step back and ask ourselves what really needs to be done in order to be successful.
In my opinion, it needed to be a coach with a better history than Riley or at minimum some assistants. So yeah, ill give him a chance, but do I expect him to get us over the hump and magically compete with Ohio State, MSU or Michigan in a few years? No.
