Good article on Mike Smith.

I think a few people were upset with this guy last year with all the penalties that he had for holding and false starts. But he had made some pretty big strids to clean up his play during the offseason and then the lefg injury occured. I believe alot of us thought he would come back next year but it seems that it won't be possible. He mentions that he is appealing the decision but doesn't know what will happen.

I for one do hope that if he cannot come back next year, he at least is healthy enough to play in the bowl game. I would hate to see a young man like that who has never had a serious injury in his career at Nebraska spend his last year never seeing the field because of a broken leg.

What a bullsh#t rule. They need to change that ASAP.

He can't get a medical redshirt because he hasn't had a previous major injury before.
:yeah I cannot understand the logic of that rule, they say it didn't happne in the season, but it was only a couple of weeks before the season started. He hasn't had a major injury before, so the NCAA is more likely to give you a medical redshirt if you are prone to injuries but if its a one time thing than you are S.O.L.

Smith, who redshirted in 2006, said he's not eligible for a sixth season because he's never had another serious injury, and because he wasn't injured during the season."It's the dumbest rule ever," he said. "I can still appeal it, so it's not totally over."

Smith doesn't seem optimistic about a successful appeal, though, hence the goal to play in the bowl game.

"That would be awesome, because I don't want to end my career like this. It'd be tough. Really tough."
What a weird rule. Hate for it to end this way with Mike Smith. The guy came through big time to help in a position of need. He’s not a natural O-lineman. Would have been great on the other side of the ball, which is what we recruited him for. But we were desperate for offensive lineman and the coaches asked him to switch positions. Mike Smith really helped the team out for a couple of years there.

Isn't it pretty regular for players to redshirt, then get injured for the season, and get a 6th year that way? Maybe I'm wrong. This is interesting. I thought Smith was walking away of his own volition.

I agree. Out of all the dumb NCAA rules there are this has to be one of the worst.
