I agree and wasn't arguing anything different.  But, with something like that, I would like to see a stat to see really where we were at in this game.  Thinking back, the major things that could have affected this:

a) They had a great punt early in the game that went out at the 1.  I'm not sure how we could have changed that.

b) Returning kickoffs to the 20 instead of fair catching it and starting at the 25.  Doesn't sound major, but it adds up over a game.

c) Our bad punts.  Hopefully our punter gets over his nerves and does better.  I'm sick of having bad punting.

Totally agree, man. And you're right about Point A above - but what you hope to do is to match them up and have some great punts of our own that pin them inside their 5.

And we just don't do that.

One frustration I have with how they keep stats on punting is they mostly key on distance.  Well, that's important if you are backed up in your territory.  But, to me, the more important stat is how close to their goal line do you pin them.  Sure, they keep a stat of how many inside the 20.  But, I wish it were more specific.

Yeah.

Then another topic: Another layer on beating your opponent on average starting field position is not having 3 & outs when you start a drive also. You want to at least get a couple first downs and get to midfield if you're going to get stopped.

I know that's an "oh duh" comment, but it's big. So if you don't get to midfield and your punter can only kick it 26 yards you are in for a rough day against pretty much every team on our schedule not named Fordham.

If you compare the stats of that game last night to ours with Illinois, it looks like this:

-NU total offensive yards: 392

-Minnesota total offensive yards: 408

So, how does Minnesota wind up with 31 points against a Top 5 team and we wind up with 22 points against freaking Illinois? Answer:

1. We made waaaaaaay more mistakes than they did.

2. Our special teams are killing our season each year now; average starting field position in the Big 10 is unbelievably important.

Some of these mistakes include Martinez missing an open man in the end zone...although that one wound up only costing us four points and not 7.

My bad on misremembering the interception. It was a backbreaking INT for Minn that he threw, almost a pick 6, OSU ran back inside the 20.. But ya, that must of been the one negated by the roughing call. 

I'm not really arguing that Minnesota did not look like a better team than NU yesterday, they absolutely did. I am just saying they literally made some of the same stupid mistakes we did that caused them to lose. We are saying those mistakes are because SF is a poor coach. If that is the case, we can't say the PJ's team, making similar mistakes, is a wonderful coach. The goalposts change when we do that. The take home from this may actually be worse than which team made mistakes. In reality, both made similar amounts of mistakes causing their respective teams to lose, but our team looks pretty sorry even outside of those mistakes.  The team we marched out against Illinois is not a good team, mistakes or not. :/

 
FYI....Minnesota fair caught every kickoff so they guarantee they start at the 25.  I know that drives some fans nuts because we did it so often last year.  But, with the new rules of starting at the 25, it's many times the smart thing to do.

I'm sorry but I believe that is an objectively flat out incorrect assessment. Both teams had a scoop & score fumble...and then that's about it.

We had an interception get negated because of a roughing penalty, we had a safety because of a mind-blowing decision to field a punt on our 1, we had a pick play that negated a huge 1st down conversion reception, we had a critical bad snap (for the millionth time) in the second half, we had a couple punts go for only roughtly 25 yards, we ran kickoffs out that should have been taken as kickoffs, and the list just goes on from there.

There was a huge, huge discrepancy in the amount of mistakes that we made against Illinois and the amount that Minnesota made against Ohio State...and they were playing Ohio State.

Again, they had a holding call negating a 15 yard run by Ibrahim leading to 2nd and 32 instead of 3rd and 4, leading to a punt. They had an additional fumble. They gave 2 one strike touchdowns on blown coverages. They actually had the same pick play that would have negated a huge conversion but it didn't get called.  If you watch the second half, you will see them shooting themselves in the foot as they try for the comeback. I will just concede the point that we made more mistakes if that works.. Main point is, they made mistake after mistake in the 2nd half trying to pull off the upset. I watched a team that played solid in the first half meltdown in the second. Looked like watching us try to come back. But yes, OSU is better than Illinois.  Minnesota is better than NU.  Just saying Minnie made mistakes so lets not anoint PJ as some coaching guru.  And I fear Nebraska is actually further behind than just some mistakes.

Just hanging the proverbial B1G hat on OSU every year isn't a good business decision for the conference. If the administration could actually make sound decisions at either school they would be sitting with OSU at the top of the conference.

It's kind of hard to when we can't even buy a holding call against any team. Hell the only one we had last week was on a kick return...

To add to this their pick play that didn't get called was so much worse than the one we got called on. Ours was pretty common pick and gets called sometimes but often not. I think it was Martin that got called; he closed the gap to his defender and the pick was on the crossing defender who couldn't make the gap in time. Their player ran directly at the crossing defender without even trying to hide it.

According to PJ Fleck, the Big Ten has acknowledged that targeting should have been called.  ""The fumble with Michael Brown-Stephens, whether I agree or disagree, it does not matter now," Fleck said.
