My thoughts on forum organization

After that post by 37, I started wondering how we could clean up the main board. And I eventually got to thinking we should move some things around. I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to Landlord's whole spiel on the reorganization thing, but these are just my thoughts.

To start:

I think we need an 'Announcements' forum and reserve the 'Announcements' feature for more major, board wide announcements that we want to immediately push out to every outlet. The motivation behind this was a lot of the pinned topics seem to be more of the announcement category, and having that in the main Husker football forum just clogs it up.

I pay attention to these forums sort of rarely, so that might be one consideration. However, if we have that as the first forum you see, and don't make announcements too frequently (more than several/week may be pushing it), it can be a good way to alert users to both Board News and things like the 2010 coaching event, without cluttering up Husker football talk.

I think that this can go either as the first forum listed in the first group of forums (called 'Husker Sports' right now), or in its own heading category.

Subforums: General consolidating?

I think subforums should be reserved for when there's plain and obvious utility (e.g, Plan-It Husker; A/V). Otherwise, all they do is partition discussion and make the user take more clicks (or less obvious clicks) to get to where they want. If the sub forum is a frequent topic of discussion, that's a big "Don't" IMO.

For instance, I think "All Other Husker Sports" should be one forum. I think that people talking Huskers have the mindset of either talking Husker football, or talking Husker non-football. Maybe if we were Kansas, we could have Basketball in its own forum. But looking at each subforum in "Other Husker Sports", the closest the most active of those forums gets is two orders of magnitude less discussion than "Husker Football." Combine all 'Other Husker Sports', and you're still 10x off. I just don't see the clutter that having those specific subforums avoids, or the organizational benefit they provide. If it's sort of nice just to have the different categories, that benefit is far outweighed by the blow to accessibility it causes.

Same for "More Sports." The Big 12/NCAA distinction in particular is a sort of fuzzy one considering the overlap, but I think everything can go into one here, again. "Other Football" could get its own forum - where other NCAA teams/ NFL teams can be discussed, because I think there's a fair sized relevancy gap between Husker football - other football - other sports.

New forum: Other Football?

This is about relevancy, too. News about UCLA football players being arrested is something that I feel shouldn't be a good 800 pixels of vertical space away from Husker football news.

I think having a "Other Football" forum addresses this issue. Any talk specific to another football team - be it another college or a NFL team - can go here. It makes a lot more sense than having "Big 12 football" in a separate forum from "NCAA football", but in the same forum as "Big 12 baseball." ANY college football talk outside of the Huskers is still relevant enough to get its own forum. And the discussion is not significant enough to draw a distinction between that and the NFL. We like to talk football here a lot, and it's either "Husker" or "not."

I also think that the less forums we have, the better. It makes everything much closer together, much easier to get to, and much easier to talk about. There's only so many forums one can devote their time to browsing. Having too many, especially when they are unnecessary, just means the topics that go into those forums don't get the views that they could and should be getting.

I'm not too sure where this forum should go, though. Should it be its own thing, or a subforum of 'Husker football'? I feel this and 'Husker football' are closely tied enough for that to maybe be the case. Other football discussion is clearly related to and subsidiary to Husker football discussion.

Rearranging

Going back to the last point about the 800 pixels between UCLA football and Husker football discussion...

I feel - and this is somewhat drawn from my own tendencies, so please correct me if you feel differently - that people come on here to (primarily) talk about a few things: Husker Football/football, Football Recruiting, Other Husker stuff, Other sports, and just lounge around with other users.

Those are five forums that belong together under one forum heading, just for accessibility purposes.

All the other forums that we have on here can be broadly categorized, IMO, as 'utility forums' - forums that fill some niche utility, and hence don't belong at the top of the page in the forum ordering.

A quick look: Plan-it Husker (organizing watch parties), A/V stuff (playing around with graphics and sigs and such), Contest Crib, Classifieds, etc.

So here's what the final revised structure would look like. (Disregard the naming of the forum headers, didn't really know what to call them)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

-"Announcements"

HUSKERBOARD

-"Husker Football" ('other' football being its subforum for now - I didn't like the idea of having six forums up here, but that would be an alternative)

-"Recruiting"

-"Big Red Lounge"

-"Other Husker Sports"

-"Other Sports"

OTHER STUFF

-"Plan-It Husker"

-"A/V Tech Club"

-"Contest Crib"

-"Classifieds"

-"Daily Skin"

-"Woodshed"

-"Feedback"

Rumorville/Conference Expansion and Archives

I agree with AR: Conference Expansion can be shut down. The drama for us is over; we are in the Big 10. Any further discussion on conferences can appropriately go either in 'Husker football' (if it's relevant to Big 10 or Big 12) or football in general.

I also am not really sure why Rumorville is still around...nostalgia? It seems the users really like it, but to be honest I'm not really sure what threads should go there that wouldn't make more sense going somewhere else. It's a fond time to remember, Rumorville, and maybe it should be mothballed as it was before. Don't remember how that was done, but we could lock everything up in this and conference expansion and make them subforums in an "Archives" forum.

All the past recruiting cycles can go there too. Didn't we use to have a 2006 recruiting subforum? - what happened with that. In any case, the '07 and '08 ones have to go soon, as we're getting into '13 recruiting territory...I figure we can have maybe 6 at a time, as we do now. If we could have sub-sub forums, the recruiting archives should just be a subforum under 'Recruiting.'

Pinned topics

Back to the original (sort of) topic. I started thinking we needed an 'announcements' forum after looking through the pinned topics list under Husker Football. I think pruning down the pinned topics list as well as the subforums would help a lot in reducing the scrolling once you get to that forum. So just my 2cents here:

--Leave Pinned--

*2010 @ Huskerboard (Combining schedule & watchsites with schedule wallpaper post)

*Introduce yourself

* Nebraska Tradition (this is the kind of thread that will probably expire as a pinned topic after our first year of Big 10 play)

--Unpin and Move to 'Announcements'--

*Inside Word (2010 Season Spotlight Event - pinned there til it's over)

*Banner Contest (pinned there til it's over)

*Using the IGNORE function (pinned there)

*Holiday Bowl

*Huskerboard All Time Team

Sorry if that was a load to read. I would love to hear you guys' take on this though. It is the offseason after all, and as good a time as any to explore these kinds of options.

I started thinking about the pinned items as well. I like the idea of a "announcment forum" Anyone else for or against it?

The only problem with this is the Lounge is a popular forum. That gets people to at least scan the other forums.

For it.

I think we need to take a long look at what we want HuskerBoard to be. Obviously, the main content will always be Husker Football and all related to it. I like zoogie's arrangment, but with a few tweaks. First, keep the BS forum in the "Other Stuff" section. It really doesn't have much to do with Husker sports at all. Second, move the Board Feedback to the Announcement forum. In other words, the Announcement forum would have two (or possbily three) sub-forums - one for Notices, one for Feedback, and one possibly for Tips and Tricks or something like that - just some clues on how to work the Board. I'm not entirely sold on that, though, so just two would work fine for me.

We would move the pinned items in Husker Football to the Notices sub-forum, leaving only such things as the Schedule/Results update there each week during the season. I'm a tad torn on how to handle the Prediction contest, though - do we do it in Notices or in Husker Football? Also, we have to seriously consider a mass email to members to explain the new setup and where things go.

It's time to hide Conference Expansion and Rumorville - there's nothing in them that can't go into another forum. To zoggie's point about the sub-forums in Recruiting - we can hide those. If someone brings them up. we can unhide them if need be, but as he noted, there just isn't any action happening in 07 through 09 - those we can hide.

Regarding sub-forums - I see the need to keep the sub-forums in the A/V Tech Club, as well as the Recruiting forum, naturarlly. I would also keep the Politics and Religion and the Recipies sub-forums in the BS forum - they get enough hits to justify it. However, outdoor sports isn't needed, particularly in the new arrangment - those posts would go in the Other Sports forum (and not as a sub-forum). No sub-forum for Big 12 or Big 10 - posts for those would go into the Husker Football forum until we leave the Big 12 - then all Big 12-related posts would go in the "Other Sports" forum.

So, here's how it would shake out with my tweaks:

Announcements and Board Info

--Notices

--Feedback

--Tips and Tricks (tentative; again, not sold on this idea)

Sports

--Husker Football

--Recruiting

----Sub-Forums for each year

--Other Husker Sports

--Other Sports

Other Stuff

--Big Red Lounge

----Recipies

----Politics and Religion

--Plan-It Husker (I have no problem with leaving this in the Sports forum, though)

--A/V Tech Club

----Same sub-forums as we have now

--Contest Crib

--Classifieds

--Daily Skin

--Woodshed

I'm definitely in for some consolidation. In my eyes we do a little too much categorizing. It can make it difficult to find things and even remember where to post. I had to use the search function to find the "Big 10 message boards" thread after looking for 5 minutes. As far as the restructure goes, I think that AR pretty much hit it on the nose.

While we are talking about it, I would like to voice my opinion on this section:

While I think that the Big 10 helmets look cool I really don't think that it serves much of a purpose, and I certainly wouldn't leave them their long term. We could just move them below the clock at the bottom of the main page. All in all I just think we could save some page space. Below is how I think it could be better utilized.

This is a great topic, and if we can hammer this out in the next month we'll be ahead of the game for the impending season.

I think the Archive section is brilliant. We could move Rumorville and Expansion there, and bring them back out when we need them again (which we will, some day). I would suggest that the Archive section is locked so people don't continue to post in it, or we'll just have the same problem we already have with fragmented conversations.

I like Frank's layout with a couple of tweaks (in red):

I would definitely, definitely have Husker Football up top, front and center. That's the meat and potatoes of HuskerBoard, so it has to go up top. Announcements and whatnot are important, but they are more important to folks like us who do the running of the site. The Users will not want to skip past that section to get what they want, which is football talk.

I think I see what Eric is talking about with keeping the Lounge down lower - it's like the grocery store where they keep the meat and milk on the back aisle, so you have to walk past the shelves to get there. The idea is that you might just buy something else on impulse while you walk by. Good idea.

Last, I really think we need to keep a section specifically for our conference, so I added the Big 12/Big 10 forum below Husker Football.

I agree on the helmets eventually moving. I'm thinking, though, that we want to leave them as they are for the next season, at least, and perhaps the first year of competition in the Big 10. I think they serve two purposes - first, it's a neat way to show our feelings on joining the Big 10 to those Big 10 fans that come across the Board. Second, since they linked to each school's official web site, it acts as a source of information for our fans as they get used to the new world order.

But, as always, I'm open to suggestions - perhaps we need to move them sooner. And yes, I think placing them below the Countdown Clock is a good place for them eventually.

When we hide the Rumorville and Conference Expansion, we can also lock them - although I'm not sure that anyone can get to them anyway when they are hidden. That's something we will have to test, but very do-able.

Let me play Devil's Advocate on one point - Announcements. One of the problems we have is that folks don't bother to read pinned topics - at least, some of 'em don't. As an example, when we merged the Former Huskers sub-forum into the Husker Football forum, we had a good number of members comment that they couldn't find it - and this after we pinned a notice of the change. One reason for having the Announcement forum at top is to catch everyone's eyes before they head to the Sports forum. Right now, the only option we have to inform members other than pinning topics or having the Announcement forum up top is mass emailing. We want to limit that - mass email too much and folks will start hitting the "Spam" notice and ISPs will start blocking it. But if we're judicious with the actual Announcements, folks will notice when there are new topics or posts to it, and might take a moment to hit that forum - and we know that they'll move on to the Sports forum thereafter since that's why they came here anyway.

Again, not wedded to anything - but I do want to bring up every angle so we can discuss it and hash it out before we make any changes - if we do. So, guys, weigh in with any thoughts.

How often do we make announcements that will affect the general users? Four times a year, maybe? If it's that many or fewer, it won't make sense to me to put the Announcements section, which takes up a fair amount of screen real estate, up top. I'm afraid the overall user experience will diminish if we're forever making them scroll down to what they really, truly want to read.

If there's a major announcement that needs the attention of the masses we could put a message in the top banner area directing them to the Announcement forum.

AR, the 'announcements' forum only has subforums (notices, feedback, tips and tricks), right? If that's the case, an "Announcements" section containing just one forum probably wouldn't be too out of the way. The thing is, if we had it, it wouldn't make much sense to place it anywhere other than the top. Maybe the bottom.

I think having an announcements forum with three subforums would make it a bit more than it necessarily needs to be (a one stop quick glance shop for news threads). And putting feedback up there would make it easier to get to, but it would put in two important things at the top. And I think as few important things as the top is necessary to make sure Husker stuff is the first real forum of the board with as little prior distraction as possible.

Given how rarely we make announcements, maybe it would be better to place it at the bottom? I'm not sure it would take up too much space though (if we lose the Big 10 Helmets thing, the Husker history link, and the HB on facebook link - or at least move the facebook link somewhere less conspicuous). Having 'Announcements' at the top could be considered a tradeoff: it gives us more flexibility, and items like that Husker history link and the HB on Facebook link wouldn't have to be present on the board the way they are now. On the other hand, perhaps having 'Announcements' on the bottom could accomplish the same tasks.

Also --agree with you guys on the Lounge:P

I understand - and as I said, I'm not married to the idea of having it first. My only concern is that folks will actually scroll down to see it. But, on the other hand, if we send out a mass emailing detailing the changes, that should take care of most of that, also. No problems.
