nebraskafaninwi - request ban/IP ban

Man. If you ask me banning guys sometimes results in more problems than they were causing originally.

Do you guys think repeated brief suspensions are better for the rulebreakers? If they are the real problem guys they will get fed up and stop coming back. Whereas sometimes you have guys that apparently, really, really love posting here and will just do everything they can to get around it, which is a pain to deal with.

As AR noted, it's really easy to get around an IP ban, so it's not a very powerful tool at our disposal.

Maybe even indefinite moderator approval, which I usually hate because I can't keep track of them. That'll still let them post - it just won't appear (except to us). Perhaps it sends the message in more effective terms though.

For "regular" members, I'd agree - they want to be able to participate. But my experience with these kind is that ANY effort to curb them, no matter how moderate, just incites them. A warning, suspension, ban - doesn't matter. They get their kicks from being "lawbreakers".

I usually agree with this but wifi just was not fitting into the structure. With Hedley, he took his break, came back, and he's been doing better. Now, some users still take whatever he says as some attempt to rile people up, but that's their problem. With this guy, we didn't go full on ban hammer when he was reporting posts that were in reality contradictory opinions or when knapp told him to chill with the spam. When he circumvented his timeout was when we took action. He needs to f'ing find a new place to post or a new hobby. He really didn't bring anything special to the table in my eyes. Anyone can find and post recruiting info.

If you recall, this all started with putting him on Mod Preview for four days. The instant I did that he went crazy.

I'm also very concerned with letting a professed Wisconsin fan have control of the OP in that many threads in our recruiting forum. That certainly doesn't benefit us at all.

Oh! OK. I didn't recall since I was out for most of the weekend and came back to read the crazy repeat user stuff. That's really too bad. Just seems like it's going to be a pain to deal with. Dig in the trenches, I suppose! :)

Also - yeah, if he is a Wisky fan, the degree of interest he took in Nebraska recruiting is just super, super weird.

Are you saying we have...spies?

He may be back. Our newest member is palerider. He has logged in through two IP addresses, but made no posts. The first address was 96.226.198.136, and it was used yesterday. It resolves to Dallas, TX. The second was 206.114.9.2. He logged in with that today. It resolves to Savannah, GA. His email is a Hotmail account.

I find it hard to believe that a "regular" member would be posting from two IPs that are that geographically diverse in a 24 to 48 hour period. If he holds to form, he'll post in the Recruiting section. If he's smart, he'll first post in some other forums.

So, no hard evidence yet, but be on the look-out.

Keep an eye out for gorp512. He's our newest member, and he's hit the board under three IP addresses today. Those three addresses resolve to New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Since it's almost impossible for someone to actually post from those three locations in less than a day, he has to be using Tor or some kind of proxy/onion routing. His email account is with gmail. I'm betting it's nebraskafaninwi.

While we're on the subject of folks to watch, "Someone" has stopped posting entirely after being put on Mod Preview again. But "newman" has just joined, has everything set to Private on his location, and has a gmail address.

I'm guessing this is "Someone" again. And while I know circumventing a disciplinary action warrants a ban, if the guy doesn't act the asshat, I'm willing to let him go for a while.

Everyone cool with that?

Yeah. If he doesn't cause waves, it's cool. I'm betting he can't stop himself, though.
