New AD - Different direction??

It's by far the name I've seen thrown out the most on the internet (not necessarily here, I guess).  I just don't get it.  He's yet to prove himself as an assistant, let alone coordinate.

Where did this idea originate?

He came here specifically because he wanted a path to be a coordinator and he didn't have that in Buffalo. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the coordinator here, but it was strongly implied that he was essentially the coordinator in waiting.

Ok, so he was the db coach in the NFL. He realized he isn’t going to go directly to DC at that level. So, he comes down to college to prove himself at a major D1 school….hoping someone would give him a shot. That doesn’t mean that shot is at Nebraska.  And, he first has to prove he’s a great coach in college with recruiting…etc.

He hadn’t done that. So, I’m not sure he’s the “DC in waiting” like some people think. Rhule was in a find and needed a DB coach. He was willing and on paper, he looked good.

Now, how much of the DB play this year was him totally compared to taking over someone else’s room late and maybe not a good fit with the DC?  We don’t have an answer to that.  But, I would say he has more work to do before someone is going to pay him millions to be the DC of a major program.

The wild card is what Rhule knows was happening behind the scenes this year. We don’t know that part.

Hope your right, but my gut says Butler is the next DC.

Coach Butler was the DC at Penn State for a year for Bill O'Brien then he followed O'Brien to the NFL with the Texans

This isn’t a situation where Rhule targeted Butler last offseason as a “DC in waiting”.  It was a marriage of convenience.

The only reason Butler is on the staff is because Rhule had to axe Cooper over the summer due to HR reasons.

Butler just happened to be a) jobless at the time and b) super experienced, so he was brought on to fill the spot.

Ok.  :dunno

Glad he has that experience. Again, people know way more than we do.

Maybe, he spent this year explaining to Rhule how he’s being asked to coach DBs wrong?  Or, how a different scheme would be better for the DBs?  Or, how we need to be recruiting a different type of DB?

None of us know.

Exactly.

He is the name you see, because he came here with that agreement from Rhule, to be DC in waiting.  It has nothing to do with any of us wanting that, simply that is how things appear to have been setup to go/will go.
