New DC

Clemson ended up with 326 yards. Clemson for the season averaged 455 yards.

Unfortunately, games are won and lost by points scored, not yards.

I have no issue with this guy as a possible defensive coordinator candidate, but they were very hot and cold last night on defense. Looked like a Nebraska defense. Make some hard run stops, get some big sacks, and then let some big play touchdowns happen over the top. Let’s not pretend like they put on a master class on defense yesterday. They had one of the softest schedules of any P4 team this year as well.

I came directly here to see which jackwagon arm chair coaches were gonna say ‘they didn’t look good against Clemson.’

Did not disappoint. 10/10
And I came here to see what jackwagon armchair coaches were going to try and justify calling their defense awesome with the soft schedule they had, and 36 points given up yesterday.

Same, 10/10.  :P

in all seriousness, I have no issue with this guy being a candidate, as I’ve said. Let’s just not pretend like that defense is any kind of great. I’ve heard the pro people use words like “fine” and “good”, and that seems appropriate. I don’t understand why we aren’t going after “great” for our DC.

Agree.

But the SMU offense put their D in a hole for Clemson’s first 2 TD drives (started at the SMU 33 and SMU28).
I agree with that as well, I was just saying earlier that I think, especially that fumble, was more of a compliment to Clemson‘s defense than it was a poor play by SMU‘s offense. I think as we both know, a great defense will show up after those turnovers and make the big plays needed. They could’ve held them to a field goal on at least one of them, and the narrative of that game changes. Ultimately, their defense still allowed many more points than those first two scores, and it was their offense that got them back in it.

All that said, I think I’d still like this guy at SMU more than Butler based on what I’ve seen, but I’m just a jackwagon, armchair quarterback.

To be fair if that’s the standard, the defense had to keep Clemson scoring less points than the SMU offense was scoring in order to “let their offense get them back in it”.

I do agree with what you said though in regards to the defense getting stops on either of the first two drives and possibly changing the narrative of the game to that point.

Second fewest yards Clemson put up all season. Only Georgia held them below that. The game was lost mainly because the offense and special teams gave Clemson the ball on like SMU's 30 yard line twice in the first quarter. The rest of the game, SMU was the better team.

I think it's safe to say it ain't gonna be Butler. Rhule has already had a season with the guy, it's not like he needs time to interview him. If Rhule was really impressed with Butler and thought he was a slam-dunk hire as DC, he wouldn't wait around and interview other candidates, he'd just promote the internal guy for the sake of continuity and not leaving the question open with recruits and such.

Strong chance he'll remain on staff, though...

The average starting field position for Clemson in the first quarter last night was the SMU 47-yard line

SMU Defense Yards per play:

1st Qtr -(7.52)

rest of game-(3.4)

3rd down defense

1st Qtr- (3 for 3)

Rest of game- (4 for 14)

Great adjustments kept them in it while the offense struggled to keep them off the field early.

I am not calling him Jesus or Belicheck, but this effort was pretty good, given the context of the game flow.

The Bills defense doesn’t look so hot so Butler lost out to that guy?  :dunno

I’m not sold on SMU guy.

Jim Leonhard for his Big 10 chops or Elijah Robinson for his recruiting chops.  These are the guys I’d be looking at.
What he has done to make SMU have a top defense is impressive.  Yes they lost the game but the defense never folded, it looked like it was going to be a blow out but they were in it to the end.  It took the Clemson kicker to drill a 56 yard field goal which is no easy make.  I also understand that Leonhard is on everyone's wish list but nobody knows if he wants to come back to College or what our chances are to even peak his interest in us.  I know Elijah Robinson is a great recruiter and is a good defensive coordinator as well.  I would be thrilled if we could get any of those 3 not too sure on anybody else.

Elijah Robinson would be great for Rhule if he wanted to travel instead of coaching next year.
