New rule to combat faking injuries coming?

Momentum killer.  Also, under 5 minutes left and team needs ball back.  Lay on ground and stop clock.  Regroup and get breather.  It's no secret it's been going on for years.  Opposing coaches fed up with it.  Even though they do it too in other games.

Something needs to be done. I think sitting out a drive would be appropriate.  Problem is with all the attention on football for concussions and having people upstairs monitoring for player injuries for their safety, this would seem like it would encourage players to get up and play if they actually do get dinged up a bit.  Does that put player safety at risk if you are going to punish them by sitting out the rest of the drive for being "injured" or getting medical attention.

Early season games when it is 100 out you might have to put some IV stations on the sidelines so you dont have dudes having to sit out 4th quarter drives bc they are cramping.

I like how this is being discussed finally. Something like this suggestion should be implemented, I had always thought sitting out at least the current and next set of chains would be wise.

I also think the current helmet rule is lame and needs to be revamped.

Yeah it would be interesting to see this tested out. Personally, I'm not sure if it would have that big of an impact on players trying to stay in the game to avoid being out an entire drive. I think it's pretty hard to ignore or play off the types of injuries that take players out of games like stingers, dislocations, cramping. Refs these days are pretty good at seeing players that are dinged up and stopping play to let them get medical attention. Not saying it couldn't happen, I'd just be curious how much of an impact it had.

I do wonder how easy it would be to loop hole this idea, though. In real hurry up situations, it's true that there aren't a lot of substitutions happening, but that's not always the case... a coach could bring in a 2nd or 3rd stringer to take a dive and then it's no real skin off the back.

Which one is that? The one that if your helmet pops off you come out for a play or a different one?

Another rule that needs revamped is the timeouts in OT.  I think you should only get 1 timeout for the entire Overtime.  Getting a new timeout every Overtime is ridiculous.  Especially when you get to the alternating 2 pts tries.  The offense lines up, defense calls timeout.  Offense lines up they call timeout.  Then they attempt the try.  Repeat.

Agreed that'd be a good rule change.

I've always felt OT structures are a bit too friendly, timeouts being one of those. IMO the goals of OT should be 1) equitable opportunity to win and 2) speed. Some of these OT games just take way too long.

Not directly related, but one idea that has always made way too much common sense to me is to disallow the teams/coaches from meeting during non-timeout stoppages. There's no reason not to just have the players stay in a specific part of the field without being able to huddle up with their coaches and coordinators and scheme and gameplan. Same as in basketball, during an injury or review, both teams go to their respective free throw lines.

You guys remember when one of the other Blackshirts had his bell rung but wasn't leaving the field, so Suh just flopped and pretended to be hurt?

I mean, every team does it but I don't think it's that big of a deal really. I find it about as annoying as when the "check with me" offense started taking root with Mangino.

They should focus more on speeding up reviews, improving everything about targeting, revamp the helmet rule as mentioned above, make players wear they're mouth guards and not have them be a fashion piece,  and eliminate having back to back commercials after TDs, kickoffs, change of positions, etc.

This probably makes me a weirdo, but I watched part of one Bears game this year, and watching Caleb Williams chew on his mouthguard and continue holding it between his teeth during plays instead of wearing it about drove me crazy. It bothered me so much I googled the rules and they are not even required to wear them, which made him chewing on his even more annoying. At least Mahomes wears his while he’s playing.

I predict Williams is going to swallow his during a sack someday and they’ll have to do the Heimlich on him.
